Screenwriting Master Class tip of the week: One critique I hear from script readers over and over is about flaccid, unimaginative character introductions. It’s not just about bringing creative flair to writing, it’s also about making a script reader’s job easier. Think about it: The average feature length screenplay features 15-25 characters. With most of them being introduced in a script’s first 30 pages, that is a big burden on a reader to sort them all out. A good writer helps them do this by introducing each character in a memorable way. Fortunately there are numerous techniques to approach this aspect of the writing craft and I will be exploring them in a new 1-week online screenwriting class “Character Introductions.” The class starts Monday, December 5 and is a great way to open your eyes to a host of ways to bring a character into focus quickly and make their entrance a memorable one.
