THE SCREENWRITING BLOG OF THE BLACK LIST

Google gets unfriendly and other changes on GITS

Look, I know and you know life itself would not be possible without Google. Okay, okay, that’s probably overstating it a bit. But each of us has come to rely on Google in an ever expanding way. However they just did something that really, really bums me out: They killed Friends Connect.

Remember that widget I had over on the right-hand side? People could sign in enabling them to make comments on my posts or just to show their support for the site. We had reached 2,098 members when Google pulled the plug on it today.

We had known about this for a few months. They want to push Google+, so Dino, the Master Technician of All Things Black List, created a G+ widget you can use to track GITS that way.

But with the demise of Friends Connect, doubtless we will have some transition issues. For example, I’m already getting emails from a few people who say they are unable to comment on posts. What this may mean is if you had signed up for Friends Connect, you may have to sign up to GITS again which I believe you can do by clicking on Leave A Reply, and there should be a link for you to be able to sign in that way.

I regret the hassle. Believe me I am depressed because I liked seeing that number over there on the right. Since I made the move from Blogger to Black List, we added almost 800 news GITS friends on Friends Connect. In fact, we were only 997,902 away from my ultimate goal of 1,000,000 members!

Hey, a guy can dream, can’t he?

Now it’s Google+. Hopefully that will offer greater opportunities for our community to be more of a… you know… community.

If you are having hassles or issues, or have other suggestions on how to handle this issue, please leave a reply to this thread or email me.

I had intended to do a nice beginning of the month welcome to GITS post, but this takes precedence over that. Tomorrow I’ll do the welcome post.

As always, thanks for your support, patience and understanding.

It’s Google’s world… and we’re all just trying to make our way through it!

  1. I’m probably the only one who’s quite thrilled about this – Friends Connect was blocked at my office, but Google Plus isn’t! So now I can actually participate :)

Shame about the membership total though :(

  2. I must admit I was shocked yesterday, not even being able to log in. You’ve put such hard work to create bond and momentum and for a while I thought it could have been damageg by a technical and pointless issue. But you said the word Scott : we are a community, we’re passionate, hard workers, trying to get closer to the best understandind and practicing of our art. And we’ll share this, ni matter what. Welcome back Gits, stronger than ever !

  3. Still works fine logging in with google. I was about to suggest using disqus for wordpress comments as it allows one to sign in from many different networks. Probably no need to switch since it appears to be the same as before.
