Spec Script Sale: “Divorce Party”

Enderby Entertainment acquires comedy spec script “Divorce Party” from writer Mukilan Thangamani (story by Ali Millwala and Mukilan Thangamani). Per a press release from the production company:

A hilariously raunchy ensemble comedy chronicling the intersecting arcs and misadventures of a group of people attending a divorce party. Bridesmaids meets There is Something About Mary.

Lest you think the idea of a divorce party is the concoction of a screenwriter, think again. I Googled “divorce party” and found a zillion sites including here, here, and here. There is divorce party tableware, divorce party buttons, even a divorce party “license to flirt.”

The success of this script sale is due in part to the writer tracking current cultural trends, finding something distinctive and writing a story with a fresh spin in a common genre [comedy].

Evidently Thangamani is from New Zealand, so good to see an ‘outsider’ break in.

By my count, this is the 64th spec script sale in 2012.

There were 53 sales by this date last year.

The 64th spec script sale didn’t occur last year until September 8.

Spec script sales are up 17% year-to-date compared to 2011.
