Showrunner Rules from Jeffrey Lieber: Numbers 61-70

February 15th, 2013 by

Jeff Lieber is a screenwriter and TV writer. His movie credits include Tuck Everlasting and he is currently an executive producer of the USA Network series “Necessary Roughness.” On Twitter (@JeffLieber), he has run a series of tweets called Showrunner Rules. For background on Jeff and this Twitter series, go here.

Today: Numbers 61-70.

Showrunner Rule #61: Pimp episodes u wrote before they air. Season 2.5 premier of #NecessaryRoughness USA 2night @ 10PM. Watch & tell a pal.

Showrunner Rule #62: Network ratings come at 8AM PST, cable about 10:30. Be armed with cocktail of advil, tums & gummy bears. (Just cuz).

Showrunner Rule #63: The “lower level” exec you’re thinking about crapping on will soon run the network. Not might, will. Never forget this.

Showrunner Rule #64: Seasons of a pilot. June-Sept; selling. Oct-Dec; writing. Jan-April; Shooting/Editing. May; pickups. Rinse & repeat.

Showrunner Rule #64A: Rule 64 is for network pilots. Cable pilots… not on a annual schedule.

Showrunner Rule #65: Turn in script Thursday, they read Friday & YOU work (do notes) on weekend. Turn in Friday… THEY work weekend. :)

Showrunner Rule #65A (addendum): Then again… you’re likely working the weekend anyway (sigh).

Showrunner Rule #66 (1 of 2): Must know what’s in BOTH parts of your budget; the pattern (budget per ep) & “amort” (budget for season)…

Showrunner Rule #66 (2 of 2): …because “amort” budget is the nefarious hiding place of the hidden costs that take money off the screen.

Showrunner Rule #67: Coffee shop drink not only better then free show drink, but chance to see the sky & pause before killing off character.

Showrunner Rule #68: Notes call set for 4 will be pushed to 4:20, won’t start until 4:23 & small talk means 1st note isn’t given ’til 4:26.

Showrunner Rule #68A (addendum): Delay based on rule #64 will cause you to get stuck in Friday traffic, adding a 1/2 hour to commute home.

Showrunner Rule #69: What it looks like if one (me) suggests actor now dating Net Prez’ ex-wife. Hint, I’m on the left.

Showrunner Rule #70: Keep #noteslingo de jour OUT of the “room”. “Hang a lantern on it.” “Lean in moment.” Submit your own…

I asked Jeff for a bio. Here it is:

One day in 1986, after blowing up a glass beaker in a lab in high school, Jeffrey Lieber’s science teacher, Dr. Nagoi, turned to him and said, “Jeffrey… you be an actor… you be a writer… maybe have a family… but please, dear God, don’t be a chemist.” And it was those words that launched a journey that has ended up with Mr. Lieber becoming a screenwriter, showrunner, blogger, father and husband (Credits? Go here). Every day, while pursuing his passions, Mr. Lieber takes a moment to stop and thank Dr. Nagoi for his sage advice.

Thanks, Jeff. Best of luck on the front lines of running a TV series and all your creative endeavors!
