Reminder: The Quest Initiative 2013

March 3rd, 2013 by

Last year in a true spirit of the spec act, I launched The Quest Initiative. From the original announcement:

I will be looking to work with up to four writers in a 24-week Screenwriting Master Class intensive [The Quest] in which they will learn my comprehensive theoretical approach to the craft, then put that knowledge to use prepping and writing a full-length screenplay.

The cost? Nothing.

That’s right, a 6-month deep immersion in screenwriting theory and scriptwriting workshop where you end up with an original screenplay with me as your mentor for the entire process, and you don’t have to spend even a dime.

And if at the end of the process you have written a great script… you will have direct access to industry insiders.

Over 1,500 writers submitted nearly 4,000 loglines for consideration. I ended up selecting 8, each of whom went through the Quest process with me, and I have moved forward with most of them into their script rewrites with a goal of getting them representation, selling their script and getting a movie made.

As I announced here back in January, I am going to do The Quest Initiative 2013. If you are interested, here are the key dates:

May 20-June 8: Logline submission period.

June 16: First cut announced.

June 20-27: Interviews with finalists.

June 30: The Quest Initiative participants announced.

July 14: We begin The Quest.

December 28: Delivery of first draft.

If you want to have the opportunity to participate with a select group of writers in The Quest for free with me as your mentor, start generating story concepts and working up loglines right now. Just like last year, I am only looking for the best high concepts, primarily in the Action, Comedy, Horror, Thriller genres. Not exclusively. If you have an absolute killer story idea in another genre, I will give it strong consideration. But the simple fact is I am looking for mainstream, commercial movie projects and that all starts with mainstream, commercial story concepts.

That means you have about 3 months to come up with an outstanding story concept and develop it into a kick-ass logline.

That means probably 4-6 of you will have a unique opportunity to seriously upgrade your grasp of the craft and end up with a strong first draft of an original screenplay.

That means once again, I am putting my faith in you, that there are writers outside Hollywood who have the ideas, talent, drive, personality and sheer force of will to become professional screenwriters.

So there you have it: The Quest Initiative 2013. If you have any questions, feel free to post in comments.

NOTE: I am not accepting any logline submissions until May 20. Do not send me loglines now or before then. Thank you!

Scott, it is so exciting that you’ll be offering this again and so hugely generous of you.

    > …start generating story concepts and working up loglines right now.

I hope GITS Readers who are serious about this opportunity are at work on their premises and loglines already. Anyone who’d like a hand is welcome to come join us at the forum in the Idea Factory and the Logline Workshop, too.

    1. Scott says:

Great suggestion, Shaula. Also I will be leading a webinar on March 27 at 5PM Eastern called Story Concepts That Sell. More information on that soon.

Great to see the Questers regrouping. 2012 Quest was such a positive experience.
If you didn’t submit your logline last time, all I can say is go for it!

Sorry Scott if that means you have a few extra thousand loglines to read. :-)

  3. Yay!! Very excited!!! Can’t wait!

  4. Despina says:

do you have any articles archived or rec’d resources for paring down a story or concept into a succesful logline? i’m a total noob and would love some guidance as this is where i’m having the most trouble so far. thanks!

    1. Scott says:

There are lots of theories about loglines. My basic thing is communicate: Protagonist, Hook, Conflict, Genre. I get into this fully in a class I’ll be teaching beginning March 25 called Story Summaries which you can learn more about here.

Can’t believe it’s nearly a year since you launched the last Quest.

I used to struggle with ideas and loglines. But with last year’s Quest and all your help and advice, I find that ideas come much more easily now.

I’ll definitely be submitting a logline or two this year.

Will you place a cap on the number of loglines someone can submit this year Scott?

    1. scriptwriter13 says:

      +1

this was my question as well. I have three or four really high concept ideas that I’ve been wanting to start working on. Is there a limit?

      1. Shaula Evans says:

I hope you do set a limit this year, Scott, just to keep the crazy down on your end. Plus, on our end, it may help motivate writers to approach this in a business-like way and focus on presenting their best ideas polished up into compelling loglines.

        1. Scott says:

I am DEFINITELY going to put a cap on the number of loglines each writer may submit. Last year WAY too many subpar loglines, people just throwing stuff against the wall, seeing if it would stick.

As Shaula suggests, I believe having a limit will compel each entrant to do some hard thinking about their story ideas and work to get them into the most compelling, entertaining shape.

I think 3 is a good number as a cap.
