Spirit of the Spec: Poem Store
It never ceases to amaze me how often I get hit up to promote this, that and the other thing. I sift through them all and if they seem worthy of attention, I’ll retweet or even post on the blog.
Last week I received an email about a Kickstarter campaign to help defray the upfront costs of a book… written by a well-known Hollywood individual… who due to the success of the many movies with which they have been involved presumably has more than enough money to pay for those costs… then turn around and sell the book to the very people who had plunked down money to help get the book published.
There is something wrong with that picture.
I would much rather promote someone like Jacqueline Suskin. She has a website called Poem Store.
Poem Store is a performance-business-poetry piece that consists of composing custom poetry on a manual typewriter, in exchange for a donation. Your subject, your price.
I mean look at this!
I talk a lot about the spirit of the spec: You get an idea. You act on your idea. You put it out there.
That is what Jacqueline is doing. Interfacing with real people. Using her creativity. Bringing poetry to the masses. That is honest work.

Look, this is just a humble little blog. Why I get inundated with requests for PR is beyond me. But if you want any traction at all here, you have to understand my commitment to the spirit of the spec.
If you truly believe in your creativity, you ought to be willing to put your proverbial ass on the line.
