Daily Dialogue — May 7, 2014

Luke: How did my father die?
Obi-Wan: A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine until he turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi knights. He betrayed and murdered your father. Now the Jedi are all but extinct. Vader was seduced by the dark side of the Force.

Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope (1977), written by George Lucas

The Daily Dialogue theme for the week: Lying.

Trivia: At one point in the scripting process, the Force was a large crystal or galactic holy grail called the ‘Kyber crystal’. This idea was used in the 1978 Star Wars novel “Splinter of the Mind’s Eye”.

Dialogue On Dialogue: Is this a lie? Or a half-truth? Ben’s careful reply is technically accurate in all that it says, but it omits the crucial detail, which is that Ben’s pupil and the good Jedi, Luke’s father, that the pupil “betrayed and murdered” are one and the same.
