The NFL, The Company and the Black List: New Screenwriting Initiative

An announcement today from The Black List:

The Black List is pleased to announce a new relationship with the National Football League and Charlie Ebersol and Mike Lanigan’s The Company designed to find writers for an NFL themed screenplay, for which they will be paid WGA minimum for two screenwriting steps.

“This collaboration with the NFL and the Black List will truly give writers looking for a big break a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to tell the next great NFL Story, “ said Charlie Ebersol, Founder and CEO of The Company. “Through this endeavor, we are proud to give someone the chance to make their football and writing dreams come true, just as working with the NFL continues to be a dream for us.”

“We are excited to work with some of the best in entertainment to bring to life new stories that give our fans more ways to connect to the game they love,” said Tracy Perlman, NFL Vice President of Entertainment Marketing and Promotions. “Our relationship with The Company has grown exponentially over the years and we are looking forward to working with the innovative team from The Black List.”

Beginning today, writers with screenplays hosted on the Black List website who have not made more than $500,000 from their screenwriting work can opt into consideration. On July 25, the Black List will select a short list of ten writers whose submissions, along with a professional resume and personal statement, will be reviewed by Ebersol’s The Company and the NFL. From there, the NFL and The Company will draft two screenwriters who each will write a screenplay with a general NFL theme for development and possible production.

Remember, scripts must be hosted for a least a week during the submission period to be eligible, which means they must be uploaded by July 18 at the latest. Furthermore, if you wish for a paid evaluation to be considered as part of the data associated with your script, we strongly advise initiating the evaluation at least a month before the deadline. The Black List does not guarantee evaluation turnaround times, but they typically require minimum 10 days and the average is currently just over two weeks.
