Daily Dialogue — March 19, 2015
“Okay, Jones. You win. Blow it up.”
— Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan, story by George Lucas and Philip Kaufman
The Daily Dialogue theme for the week: Competition.
Trivia: Steven Spielberg and Melissa Mathison wrote a script during shooting breaks on the location of this film. Mathison was there to visit her husband, Harrison Ford and Spielberg dictated to her a story idea he had; that script was eventually called E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982).
Dialogue On Dialogue: The Beloq-Jones relationship is an interesting one. Definitely a competition, but more than that. Consider this assertion from Beloq to Jones: “You and I are very much alike. Archeology is our religion, yet we have both fallen from the pure faith. Our methods have not differed as much as you pretend. I am but a shadowy reflection of you. It would take only a nudge to make you like me. To push you out of the light.” There is a definite narrative connection between the two beside being mere competitors. Beloq can be seen to be a projection of Jone’s shadow self.
