I asked each of the filmmakers in this month’s series to answer this question: What inspired you about this particular story to make it a movie? Here is Martin’s response:

Since I’m very into the American Independent Film, I wanted to tell a story about an unique and disturbed character. The Puppeteer actually started with a simple idea as it’s supposed to deal with the social prejudices of hitchhiker, though this time it goes the other way around — it’s not the hitchhiker the audience should skeptically eye on. What happens, if the ride is a social disturbed guy who can only satisfy his abnormal needs by controlling and changing other people’s lives?! As this idea enhanced, it seemed more provoking to include the world of chance encounter and the resultant interpersonal relationships as well, because mostly everyone in the modern world had such an experience in their lifetime..

About the Production

Inspired by American film I wanted to shoot in English, even though the entire crew was German. On set we were a cast of four and a crew of three (camera, sound, director). After planning on shooting in four days, the weather ruined our first day of shoot, so we had only three days to shoot a film of 20 minutes. Like every production there are some quite amusing anecdotes about it, but my conclusion: if you’re just getting into film, nothing teaches you as much as your own very first film production.
