Today’s Writing Quote

“Just have good characters and good scenes and something that plays.”

— Billy Wilder

Today’s Inspirational Video

The great L.A. Dodger broadcaster Vin Scully calls this epic home run by Kirk Gibson. Amazing moment. Amazing job by Scully.

Today’s Loos Award winner: Jonathan Melikidse.

Sure, I could give Jonathan an award for being a Zero Draft Thirty super-moderator. Or for hosting the monthly 24 Hour Writing Scamper-A-Thons. Or for that time we had a drink together in Santa Monica one night many years ago. But the reason Jonathan deserves an award is because of this:

Jonathan is a Los Angeles born, now Maui-based screenwriter. First generation American of Russian-Georgian immigrants and the youngest of five, Jonathan was always the storyteller of the family. Sometimes it got him in trouble, sometimes it saved his hide. Regardless, he was born to observe others, internalize what he saw, and turn that into a story for all. He is a graduate fellow of the Creative Lab Hawai’i — Producers Immersive, and currently a fellow in the Weekend Ideation Program for Micro-Budget Motion Picture Directing. His horror, thriller, and dramatic scripts dive into often ignored parts of life such as homelessness, mental illness, zealotry, and broken families. “Mama’s Bench,” Jonathan’s directorial debut, was an official selection at the Made in Hawaii Film Festival (2020). His script DRIFTWOOD (AFF 2nd Rounder. Nicholl top 10%) is currently in pre-production.

And this Saturday at 2PM Pacific, there will be a table read of his screenplay Driftwood as part of The Rising Workshop. Jonathan decided he’s just going to make the damn movie! Let’s support him, shall we? I’ll do my tiny little part here by naming Jonathan today’s Anita Loos Award recipient!

Jonathan, may this award serve as a creative talisman throughout your movie’s journey to opening night. Pōmaikaʻi!
