Today’s Writing Quote

“Plot is no more than footprints left in the snow after your characters have run by on their way to incredible destinations.”

— Ray Bradbury

Today’s Inspirational Video

If THAT didn’t get your creative juices going, I don’t know what will!

Today’s Loos Award winner: Anita Brandt Burgoyne.

Anita posted that at the Zero Draft Thirty Facebook group. Yes, the sentiment expressed in the quote is very much in the spirit of the Zero Draft Thirty approach to writing. Pressure’s off. Just write and know that you did “pretty well” with where you land by month’s end. However, there’s a more personal reason why I zeroed in on this today… and that’s Steve Martin. Specifically, his original comedy act.

You may remember him when he was a megastar. I mean, what standup comic played in arenas filled with tens of thousands of fans. But I go WAY back with Steve. Like this performance on The Tonight Show in 1975.

Or Steve in 1968 on The Smothers Brothers Show.

Seriously, I remember these performances. I was a huge Smothers Brothers fan and I stayed up almost every night to watch the stand-up comic acts on The Tonight Show. I tracked Steve Martin throughout his career. Indeed, when I moved to Aspen, Colorado in 1978, I discovered that he had performed at Jake’s Abbey in between sets by The Nitty Gritty Dirty Band. I co-hosted Hoot Night at Jake’s Abbey for nearly two years.

Years later, for reasons which still confound me, I switched from being a musician to doing stand-up. My act was inspired by Steven Martin.

Scott California: A California Kinda Guy

Here’s the thing. As crazy as it was for me to take up this bizarre comedy act in my early 30s, I almost certainly would never have intersected with screenwriting had I not. But I did. I guess that means if I hadn’t been so inspired by Steve Martin, none of what my life has become would become what it is.

Thus, I am happy to announce the recipient of today’s Anita Loos Award is Anita Brandt Burgoyne!
