August script sales analysis

Mike Scherer, a writer who also has a blog — The Scherer Joy of Writing — provides a monthly overview of Hwood script deals, breaking them down per sales by genre and type. It provides an interesting and informative look at the current state of the acquisition marketplace.

I suspect many writers tend to assess ‘where Hwood is at’ based upon the movies in general release, but that is actually more reflective of where the buying market was anywhere from 2–3 years previously (figuring that’s about how long a script takes to get produced).

I post spec script and pitch sales as they happen day-to-day. But it’s great to have someone crunch the numbers on a monthly basis to track trends.

So Mike, we salute you! And as a special treat, you are hereby awarded an additional 5% net profit points on the sale of your next screenplay!

That’s a joke, of course — virtually no screenwriter ever makes a dime on net points.
