What is the Black List Live! Staged Reading? I first posted about it here in talking about this year’s upcoming Los Angeles Film Festival which happens June 11-June 19, 2014:
A first time event taking place at the Festival this year is The Black List Live! A Staged Reading. The Festival is teaming up with The Black List to program a staged reading of an unproduced Black List script. Join us for this one night only reading of Stephany Folsom’s 1969: A Space Odyssey, or How Kubrick Learned to Stop Worrying and Land on the Moon about a White House public affairs assistant who convinces Stanley Kubrick to fake the moon landing, just in case something goes wrong during that one small step. The event will take place on June 14 at 7:00 pm at the Los Angeles Theater.

How cool? Read my April interview with “1969: A Space Odyssey” screenwriter Stephany Folsom. She is so cool, she is going to be directing the actors in the staged reading.

But whoa-whoa-whoa. What about this Free Ticket Contest Giveaway thingee. How can you — yes, you over there slouched in the corner at the Coffee Commissary in West Hollywood — win a pair of free tickets to this event? Well, champ, minimize that Norwegian neo-noir fantasy space opera you’re pecking away on and listen up.
I’ve come up with a contest inspired by Stephany Folsom and her script. An excerpt from our interview:
Scott: I figured you had an affection for Kubrick because I saw a quote where you described your script as being, “A cinematic love letter to Kubrick’s work.” I’m wondering how long you had known about the conspiracy theory that’s been floating around for decades that Kubrick did, indeed, film a fake lunar landing.
Stephany: I have an obsession with conspiracy theories. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve collected articles and research on them in a file. I don’t necessarily believe in conspiracy theories, actually I think most of them are not true, but I love the idea of conspiracy theories. I love giant plots with synchronized efforts to pull of a mission.
I had collected a lot of fake lunar landing conspiracy theories over the years, and my favorite had always been that Stanley Kubrick faked the moon landing.
Last fall, I went to the Stanley Kubrick exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. As I was walking through the exhibit and looking at all of Stanley Kubrick’s work and I remembered, “Oh my gosh. There’s that amazing conspiracy theory with Stanley Kubrick faking a moon landing. Quick, has anyone written that script or told that story?”
I came home from the museum exhibit and started outlining the story that would become 1969 A Space Odyssey.
So here’s the deal: Starting today and ending Friday, June 6 at midnight PDT, I am looking for the six best fake conspiracy theories. That’s right. I want you to use your creativity and writing skills to generate an awesome, but totally original, fictional conspiracy theory. It can be funny. It can be scary. It can be insane. But bottom line, it has to be entertaining and imaginative as shit. Bonus points if you can involve Stanley Kubrick as part of the conspiracy theory.
NOTE: YOU MAY ENTER MULTIPLE CONSPIRACY THEORIES, BUT ARE LIMITED TO ONE ENTRY PER DAY.
The judge for this contest is none other than Max Millimeter: Hollywood Movie Producer Extraordinaire. Winners announced, Monday, June 9th right here on the blog.
By the way, if you live outside Southern California and would be unable to attend the event, you may still participate in the contest if you (A) have some friends in L.A. to whom you would give your tickets or (B) contribute your tickets to give away at our discretion to a worthy film school student.
