“Crash” Davis comes back to Durham

Hard to believe it’s been 20 years since Bull Durham was released. One of the best rom-coms of all time, the city of Durham, NC has been celebrating the movie’s anniversary. The latest event: Kevin Costner (“Crash” Davis) returned to Durham to perform at the Durham Bulls new downtown stadium with his band Modern West. Referring to the movie, here’s a money quote from Costner:

“I have gotten so much credit for ‘Bull Durham,’ “ Costner said. “But Ron Shelton, who wrote it, was the heart of the movie.”

Shelton also directed the movie, but this was a personal movie for Shelton who at one point was a minor league baseball player. Great script with some especially memorable lines of dialogue as this article in the Raleigh News & Observer points out. But they missed this one from Annie Savoy, played wonderfully by Susan Sarandon:

“Well, actually, nobody on this planet ever really chooses each other. I mean, it’s all a question of quantum physics, molecular attraction, and timing. Why, there are laws we don’t understand that bring us together and tear us apart. Uh, it’s like pheromones. You get three ants together, they can’t do dick. You get 300 million of them, they can build a cathedral. “
