Daily Dialogue — August 17, 2017

OSCAR: There it is. 
CHINA GIRL: What is that?
OSCAR: Magic in a bottle. 
CHINA GIRL: Magic? 
OSCAR: Let’s give it a try. Alright. Let’s give it a little dab. Like so. K, that should work. There we go. Ta-da!

There is a horrific noise outside

CHINA GIRL: No, no, no, no! They’re coming back! 
OSCAR: It’s okay. They’re gone. 
CHINA GIRL: The Wicked Witch sent them. 
OSCAR: Why? 
CHINA GIRL: Last night the whole town was celebrating out in the streets. Because we’d heard that you finally arrived. 
OSCAR: Me?
CHINA GIRL: Everyone was so happy. But then. . .but then those things flew in, and then. . .and then they — (She begins crying)
OSCAR: Last piece. Would you like to try to stand?

The China Girl nods, and Oscar helps her to her feet.

OSCAR: There. All right. There we go. Easy. Made it. I’m gonna let you go. Now, walk to me. 
CHINA GIRL: I don’t think I can.
OSCAR: I think you can. C’mon.

The China Girl takes a few tentative steps toward Oscar.

OSCAR: All right.
CHINA GIRL: You did it! Thank you.

Dialogue On Dialogue: Commentary by Will: “This is a redemption moment for Oscar. In the real world, he was a circus magician and con man. During his magic act, a young wheelchair-bound girl asks him to make her walk again, which Oscar can’t do. After escaping to Oz, he discovers the broken China Town and the maimed China Girl and he begins his own healing process by helping her walk again.”
