Daily Dialogue — August 31, 2017

Annie: Hi, I can’t get off the couch. I got fired from my job, I got kicked out of my apartment, I can’t pay any of my bills, my car is a piece of shit, I don’t have any friends…
Megan: [gets right in Annie’s face] You know what I find interesting about that, Annie? It’s interesting to me that you have absolutely no friends. Do you know why that’s interesting? Here’s a friend standing directly in front of you, trying to talk to you, and you choose to talk about having no friends.

The Daily Dialogue theme for the week: All Is Lost, suggested by Gisela Wehrl.

Trivia: The project was written over a period of several years. Kristen Wiig had her day job on Saturday Night Live (1975) in New York City while Annie Mumolo would work on the script in Los Angeles. The two would meet at weekends and compare notes and conduct table reads, often with Judd Apatow in attendance to get his notes.

Dialogue On Dialogue: After her very public blowup, Annie goes through a classic All Is Lost turn: Not showering or washing her hair, eating ice cream, crying while watching TV shows, and not leaving her apartment. A full-on pity party. That’s when Megan shows up because that’s what Mentor characters do, they intervene with the Protagonist at crucial moments and dispense wisdom like this: “You’re your problem, Annie. And you’re also your solution.”
