Lester (V.O.): You have no idea what I’m talking about, but don’t worry…

FADE TO BLACK

Lester (V.O.): Someday you will.

American Beauty (1999), written by Alan Ball

The Daily Dialogue theme for the week: Voice-Over Narration.

Trivia: Executive producer Steven Spielberg read the script on a Saturday night. When he arrived at the DreamWorks offices on the following Monday morning, he said, “Let’s make this movie and let’s not change a word.”

Dialogue On Dialogue: The use over voice-over narration as bookend. We hear Lester at the beginning of the movie, then at the end. Up front, we learn that in “less than a year, I’ll be dead.” His parting words are his sentiments after he has died. In tomorrow’s Daily Dialogue, we’ll consider a movie which does the same thing.
