Daily Dialogue — January 14, 2012

The last hand of the game which includes Bond and his buddy Le Chiffre…

Bond: Fourteen million, five hundred thousand all in. [crowd gasp]

[Le Chiffre ponders. Strains. Checks his cards. Finally…]

Le Chiffre: Well, I think I will call you on that one.

[He goes all in.]

Dealer: Call.

[Bond and Le Chiffre stare each other out.]

Rene (incredulous): One hundred and fifteen million in the pot.

[Everyone is silent.]

Dealer: Gentleman, throw down please.

— Dealer (Andreas Daniel), Bond (Daniel Craig), Rene (Giancarlo Giannini), Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen), Casino Royale (2006), screenplay by Neal Purvis & Robert Wade and
Paul Haggis, based on a novel by Ian Fleming

The Daily Dialogue theme for the week is card games, suggested by David Proenza. Today’s suggestion by Scotsman.

Trivia: Ian Fleming celebrated the completion of the “Casino Royale” novel’s first draft by purchasing a gold-plated typewriter. Former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan reportedly bought the typewriter a few years ago for $(US)52,000.

Dialogue On Dialogue: Classic high-stakes poker lingo here, a battle of nerves or, as they say in Hollywood, a “dick-measuring contest.”
