“You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve?”

To Have and Have Not (1944), screen play Jules Furthman and William Faulkner, novel by Ernest Hemingway

The Daily Dialogue theme for the week: Question.

Trivia: The screenplay was rewritten to boost Slim’s role to take advantage of the public interest in the real-life romance between Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart.

Dialogue On Dialogue: Such a great line of dialogue. Slim asks the question, then provides the answer: “You just put your lips together… and blow.” The Hayes Code, which restricted ‘prurient content’, was a pain for writers, but it did lead to some great subtext in dialogue.
