Daily Dialogue — July 11, 2015

“Excuse me lady, but that upon which you sit is mine.”

— It Happened One Night (1934), screen play by Robert Riskin, short story by Samuel Hopkins Adams

The Daily Dialogue theme for the week: Subtext.

Trivia: This film holds the record, along with Gigi (1958), The Last Emperor (1987) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) for winning all the awards in every single major category in which it was nominated for at the Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Dialogue On Dialogue: This is Peter’s very first line of dialogue to Ellie. It takes place on the bus. She has gotten on an inadvertently taken Peter’s seat. But there’s a healthy dose of inference in the line and a portent of things to come.
