“This is gonna look so much better. You’re gonna look like a man instead of a little girl.”

Boyhood (2014), written by Richard Linklater

The Daily Dialogue theme for the week: Hair.

Trivia: Each year of Mason’s life is covered in an average of fourteen minutes of screen time.

Dialogue On Dialogue: Sometimes in stories, hair is not just hair. It’s a metaphor. Here, the shearing of Mason’s hair is a symbol of his stepfather (Professor Welbrock) attempting to exert patriarchal authority over the boy. One look at the rage in Mason’s face as his hair tumbles to the ground demonstrates the vanity of Welbrock’s efforts.
