Daily Dialogue — June 1, 2014

Donnie: [Talking about portals through space-time] Well, could these portals, um… Could these portals just appear anywhere, anytime?
Prof. Kenneth Monnitoff: I think that’s highly unlikely. No, I think what you’re talking about is an act of God.
Donnie: Well, if God controls time, then all time is pre-decided.
Prof. Kenneth Monnitoff: I’m not following you.
Donnie: Every living thing follows along a set path. And if you could see your path or channel, then you could see into the future, right? Like, uh… It’s a form of time travel.
Prof. Kenneth Monnitoff: Well, you’re-you’re contradicting yourself there, Donnie. If we were able to see our destinies manifest themselves visually, then we would be given a choice to betray our chosen destinies. And the mere fact that this choice exists would make all preformed destiny, uh, come to an end.
Donnie: Not if you travel within God’s channel.
Prof. Kenneth Monnitoff: Um, I’m not going to be able to continue this conversation.
Donnie: Why?
Prof. Kenneth Monnitoff: I could lose my job.
Donnie: Okay.

Donnie Darko (2001), written by Richard Kelly

Daily Dialogue theme for the week: Time Travel Talk, suggested by Bob_Reo_Inc.

Trivia: The song that plays as Donnie is riding his bike home in the theatrical version is “The Killing Moon” by Echo & The Bunnymen. As Gretchen waits for the school bus, a Volkswagen Rabbit vehicle quickly passes in front of her. When Elizabeth Darko is sleeping on the recliner, there is a stuffed rabbit next to her. As Donnie reaches for the car keys, there is a Polaroid picture of him and his sister in Halloween costumes on the desk. Donnie is dressed as a rabbit. When Donnie is talking to his sister after his mom leaves near the end, a “jack o lantern” bunny is seen on the table. Frank, the rabbit, often appears near a water source (sprinklers, water main, faucet).

Dialogue On Dialogue: We are talking normal universe, tangent universe, portals, and Donnie needing to die in order to save not only Gretchen, but all of reality. Want all that explained? Go here.
