Daily Dialogue — May 24, 2017

SHERYL: Richard, what are you thinking?
RICHARD: We’re gonna take him with us.
SHERYL: No, no. That is not happening. That is not happening.
RICHARD: He’s better off with us that these people. I want you to go around outside and underneath this window.
SHERYL: Dwayne, don’t you dare move. Honey, you stay here. We’ll take Olive. Frank can drive.
RICHARD: No, Sheryl, we’ll be there in two hours. I’ll call a funeral home once we get there. If there’s one thing my father would have wanted it’s to see Olive perform in the Little Miss Sunshine Pageant. Now, I believe we’d be doing a grave disservice to his memory if we were to just give up now. All right? There’s two kinds of people in this world. There’s winners and there’s losers. Okay? You know what the difference is? Winners don’t give up. So what are we here? Are we winners, or are we losers? Huh?
SHERYL: Okay, okay. Let’s do it. You guys go. Olive, you watch the curtain.

Dialogue On Dialogue: Commentary by Gisela: “Stealing you dad’s body out of the hospital isn’t really decent, but Richard’s speech makes it a decent way to fulfill the family’s and the descendant’s dreams. That makes the scene touching and funny.

The first dialogue you hear in “Little Miss Sunshine“ is Richard’s lecture about “winners and losers“ at a community collage. Lots of this motivation stuff sounds like phrasemongering and that’s how it does at the first scene. But at the hospital Richard hooks you, because you has fallen in love to the whole family. They are no losers but they are crazy enough to take their grandpa’s body to a beauty pageant.”
