Daily Dialogue — May 30, 2012
LANA: What do you need to talk to Brandon about?
TOM: Well, there’s some things I don’t understand ’cause, you took a leak with me and — pardon my French, Mom — but you shook off your dick.
CANDACE: Yeah, what was that bullshit about paying child support for a kid you can’t even visit?
JOHN: You been spoutin’ nothing but lies since the minute you came into town. Yeah.
BRANDON: No.
TOM: When you rode in on your pussy-whipped faggot horse —
JOHN: Tom. The fact is, little dude, when it comes right down to it, you’re nothing but a goddamn liar. Am I right? You know what we do to liars?
BRANDON: No, you guys.
KATE: There was never any Memphis, was there?
JOHN: Oh, my God. We’re totally fuckin’ with you! Seriously. Come on, go get Brandon a beer. Wondering about this paper that you’re in, Teena.
BRANDON: Odd. It’s our ticket. I guess they’re pretty hungry for news here, huh?
JOHN: Yeah. But what I’m wondering about is the name. Huh, Brandon? I mean, huh, Teena?
BRANDON: Boy, I really fucked up. I borrowed one of Candace’s checks and I got that speeding ticket and fake I.D. I guess I need to learn to stay home, huh?
LANA’S MOM: I invite you into my home and you expose my daughter to your sickness. Did you ever think about Lana in all this?
BRANDON: That’s all I’ve been thinking about.
JOHN: You know, Lana, if you are a lesbian, you just need to tell me.
LANA: John, I’m not. Mom, it’s not–
BRANDON: You gotta stop it. It’s not Lana, it’s me. Lana, I’m so sorry. Mom, I can explain. We can work this out. I have this thing and I’ve been to counseling.
JOHN: You fucking pervert. Are you a girl or are you not? Are you a girl or are you not?!
TOM: There’s a real easy way to solve this problem.
BRANDON: Fuck you!
TOM: What, you wanna fight?
BRANDON: Get the fuck off of me!
LANA: No, Tom! Get out of my house, you sick psycho!
JOHN: I should fuckin’ kill you for lying to Lana.
LANA: John, there’s not gonna be any killin’ goin’ on, okay? Do you trust me enough to let Brandon show me? Then I’ll tell you. You trust me enough? Huh? Okay, John?
JOHN: All right.

The Daily Dialogue theme for the week is lies, suggested by BillieJeanVK. Today’s suggestion by Teddy Pasternak.
Trivia: Hilary Swank won the lead role of Brandon/Teena after hundreds of other actresses had been considered and rejected over the course of three years. She told director Kimberly Peirce that, like her character, she was also 21 and came from Lincoln, Nebraska. But she was fibbing, and when Pierce later confronted her with the lies, she responded, “But that’s what Brandon would do.”
Dialogue On Dialogue: Lies can come unraveled and when they do, the people who were lied to can get awfully pissed off. From a writer’s standpoint, that is a great tension to have playing underneath a story. And it happens any time you have a character lie.
