BRUCE: What have I done, Alfred? Everything my family, my father, built…
ALFRED: The Wayne legacy is more than bricks and mortar, sir.
BRUCE: I wanted to save Gotham. I failed.
ALFRED: Why do we fall, sir? So that we can learn to pick ourselves up.
BRUCE: Still haven’t given up on me?
ALFRED: Never.

— Batman Begins (2005), screenplay by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer, story by David S. Goyer, based on the character created by Bob Kane

The Daily Dialogue theme for the week: All Is Lost, suggested by Melinda Mahaffey. Today’s suggestion by Will King.

Trivia: Since Alfred’s sense of duty and loyalty towards Bruce Wayne reminded him of the comradeship that exists in the military, Sir Michael Caine based his character’s voice on that of a colonel he knew when he was in the army as an 18-year-old.

Dialogue On Dialogue: Commentary by Will: “An all-is-lost moment that hinges on a callback. Early in the story we see Bruce rescued by his father after falling into a well. Here, Alfred recalls the advice Bruce received from his father after that rescue.”
