Kaye Faulkner: And there you guys were in class, trying to list all the Gilligan’s Island episodes without even a hint of irony.
Shavonne Wright: What the hell are you talking about, girl?
Kaye Faulkner: Weren’t thinking about it, were you?
Shavonne Wright: Gilligan’s Island?
Kaye Faulkner: It’s what known as a male pornographic fantasy.
Shavonne Wright: [laughs] Oh my…
Kaye Faulkner: Think about it! You’re basically alone on a deserted island with two readily available women. One, a seductive sex goddess type. The other… a healthy girl-next-door type with a nice butt. So guys have it all — the Madonna and the whore. And women get nothing! We get a geek… an overweight middle-aged guy… some nerdy scientific type, I mean…
Jodi: [interrupts] The professor… is sexy.

Dazed and Confused (1993), written by Richard Linklater

“All right, all right, all right.”

The Daily Dialogue theme for the week: School, suggested by Gisela Wehrl.

Trivia: On Thursday, October 7, 2004, former high school classmates of Richard Linklater filed a lawsuit against Universal Studios, saying that the director did not get their permission to use their likenesses and surnames, and now suffer from ridicule. The three men are Bobby Wooderson, Andy Slater, and Richard Floyd. The three men still live in Huntsville, Texas, where according to the lawsuit “we had fun in high school”. The lawsuit was eventually dismissed, due to the statute of limitations having expired.

Dialogue On Dialogue: I know it’s fashionable to go right to a Wooderson quote when referencing this movie, however I picked the ‘Gilligan’s Island’ bit of business because it involves women. And THAT was a clear sign to me that Richard Linklater was not your typical dude writing a dumb, horny male high school comedy. All of his characters are unique and interesting including the females. Linklater has turned out to be a special filmmaker.
