CHARLIE: You want me to drive?

MAX: He’s my bot. I got this!

CHARLIE: This ain’t a video game. This is for real. Right here.

MAX: You said he’s coming home in pieces. What difference does it make?

CHARLIE: All right.

MAX: I got this.

KINGPIN: Let’s get it on! Let’s get it on! Let’s get it on like ping-pong in Hong Kong! Give me a bell! Give me a bell!

CHARLIE: Don’t watch Atom, watch your opponent. Watch out for that foot. He’s looking to pin you. I told you to watch for that foot plant. Come on. Oh, here comes the sledgehammer.

KINGPIN: Whoo! Did you see that?

MAX: Come on! Get him!

CHARLIE: Don’t yell at him, control him. Slip right. Back step. Duck. You’re welcome.

MAX: Shut up! You’re not helping!

CHARLIE: Actually, I think I am.

KINGPIN: No, no, no, no.

CHARLIE: Backhand. You got speed on this guy. Just keep moving. Bob. Whoa, whoa whoa! Slip out of that corner. Keep moving! Bob and weave! That’s it! Now you’re listening to me. He can take a hit. I’ll give you this, kid, your bot can take a hit. You better slip that headlock. This ain’t gonna end well for you.

MAX: I’m trying!

TIMER: Thirty seconds!

CHARLIE: Thirty… Half a minute. Half a minute! That’s — Keep moving! Just move! C’mon, you’ve got 20 seconds! That’s a thousand bucks. Twenty seconds. Let me…let me take over! Let me take over!

MAX: No! No!

CHARLIE: Move, then. Move! Come on.

MAX: Get up, Atom. Get up, Atom.

KINGPIN: Count with me! Count with me! One!

MAX: Get up, Atom!

CHARLIE: He can’t hear you. You know you’re talking to a machine, right?

KINGPIN: Four! Five! Six!

MAX: Get up, Atom! All the way up! All the way up!

KINGPIN: NO!

MAX: Yes!

CHARLIE: Yes! YES!

KINGPIN: I’m going to fix it! I’m going to fix it! Come on, now. This thousand dollars…

CHARLIE: Yeah, thousand.

KINGPIN: …double or nothing he can’t make another round.

CHARLIE: Yeah, thanks anyway.

MAX: Deal. Double or nothing.

KINGPIN: Baby boy said it! We’re back on! We on!

CHARLIE: No, no, no! Are you crazy? You threw away a thousand bucks! He can barely stand up in there. Kid…kid, look, I really need the money, okay?

MAX: I know. Let’s work.

CHARLIE: Jesus.

The second round begins.

CHARLIE: Watch that. Watch that.

MAX: I got that.

Atom slams Metro with an uppercut. Metro goes wild.

KINGPIN: I got it. I got it!

CHARLIE: That’s a system failure!

KINGPIN: I don’t got it.

CHARLIE: He’s going down. Yes!

KINGPIN: No!

CHARLIE: Start…hey, hey! Start the count! Start the count! One! Two! Three! Four! Five! Six! Seven! Eight! Nine! Ten! You did it! We did it! Wow!

Real Steel (2011), screenplay by John Gatins, story by Dan Gilroy and Jeremy Leven, based on a short story by Richard Matheson

The Daily Dialogue theme for the week: Enthusiasm. Today’s suggestion by Will King.

Trivia: Kingpin is played by John Gatins, who wrote the screenplay.

Dialogue On Dialogue: Commentary by Will: “Sports films are filled with moments of enthusiasm, which counter-balance against the moments of pain and loss. While the crowd here is enthusiastic, and Charlie is enthusiastic at the win, Max exhibits another kind of enthusiasm. He’s dedicated to the outcome. He believes he can win. He loves the sport of robot fighting. He believes his bot is capable of beating Metro. It’s an internal enthusiasm.”
