Daily Dialogue theme for next week: Less is more

As we wrap up a week’s worth of overcome with emotion movie moments [thanks for that, Sabina]. it’s time for next week’s theme: Less is more, suggested by hobbs001.

In terms of screenwriting, this idea is nowhere more relevant than with dialogue. If you read a script while watching the movie, you see this all the time: dialogue in the script that didn’t end up in the movie. Why? Because the acting and/or visual narrative made the dialogue extraneous. By cutting the lines, it actually made the story better. Less is more.

For purpose of Daily Dialogue, I suppose what we’re looking for are the most effective lines through the shortest articulation. Like my mantra: “Minimum words, maximum impact.”

So think about the movies you’ve seen. What moments do you remember where the character spoke volumes, but through a few amount of words?

The usual drill:

* Copy/paste dialogue from IMDB Quotes or some other transcript source.

* Copy/paste the URL of an accompanying video from YouTube or some other video source.

I’d also ask you to think about why the dialogue is notable. Is there anything about the dialogue which provides some takeaway re screenwriting?
