Daily Dialogue theme for next week: Talking to one’s self

As we wrap up a week’s worth of eulogies [thanks for that, Despina], it’s time for next week’s theme: Talking to one’s self, suggested by camdeaver.

I’ll admit it: I talk to myself. Like a lot. I used to be self-conscious about it, then realized this fact: I spend a boatload of time by myself. 5, 6, 7 hours per day where I’m in my office alone. Sure, I’m busy emailing, responding to forum posts, or blogging all of which in a way is ‘communicating’ with people. But still, there is this gap. And vocal cords. And the loneliness factor.

And so I’ll talk to myself.

It’s one thing to talk to oneself in real life. However in a movie, it’s get tricky. If, for example, a character is alone and suddenly pipes up with some revelation about how they’re feeling. Or even more challenging conveying their inner mental process as they figure something out, that can feel clunky, not organic to the character and more about writer’s convenience.

So this particular theme can be a really helpful one to explore. What are some good… and perhaps not so good… examples of a character talking aloud to oneself?

For next week the usual drill:

* Copy/paste dialogue from IMDB Quotes or some other transcript source.

* Copy/paste the URL of an accompanying video from YouTube or some other video source.

I’d also ask you to think about why the dialogue is notable. Is there anything about the dialogue which provides some takeaway re screenwriting?
