The Daily Dialogue theme for next week: Breaking the 4th Wall.

“Not that I condone fascism, or any -ism for that matter. -Ism’s in my opinion are not good. A person should not believe in an -ism, he should believe in himself. I quote John Lennon, “I don’t believe in Beatles, I just believe in me.” Good point there. After all, he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. I’d still have to bum rides off people.” — Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

The 4th wall in a movie or TV show is the invisible barrier between the characters within the story and the viewer. There have been a number of memorable movies which employ this narrative device. It offers a unique opportunity for a character to convey something in an intimate fashion to the audience, so a great angle on dialogue to study this week.

Your suggestions wanted!

What to do:

  • Copy/paste dialogue from IMDb Quotes or some other transcript source.
  • Copy/paste the URL of an accompanying video from YouTube or some other video source.
  • Any trivia about the movie which you think would be of interest to readers, we always welcome that.

I’d also ask you to think about why the dialogue is notable. Is there anything about the dialogue which provides some takeaway related to the craft of writing? If so, feel free to share your Dialogue On Dialogue.
