Dispatch From The Quest: Paul Wie

Over the course of the next 24 weeks when I will be working with the writers in The Quest, I will be posting ‘dispatches’ from them to the GITS community. There are several reasons for this, the main one being educational: Hopefully you will learn something of value for your own understanding of the craft from the experiences of the Questers.

I should also add they are a great group of people, so I expect you will enjoy getting to know them.

Today I would like to introduce you to Paul Wie:

Paul Wie was born in Seoul, Korea and raised in southern California. After graduating from UC Berkeley with a B.A. in Film Studies, he worked for NBC Universal and various production companies while honing his storytelling craft directing shorts and writing features. At the 2012 shots Awards, Paul was nominated for New Director of the Year for his spec commercial, Nike “Magic Soccer Night”. His feature screenplay, “The Whaler”, was also a semi-finalist for the 2012 BlueCat Screenplay Competition. He continues to write and direct ads and shorts, while working on a Canal+ TV program starring Antoine de Caunes. Outside of moviemaking, Paul enjoys soccer, tennis, and travel.

Here is Paul’s spec Nike commercial:

Yes, I am a huge so soccer fan. No, the fact that Paul is one, too, had zero bearing on my decision to select him. First, I had no idea about any of Paul’s interest in The Beautiful Game nor his commercial. Second, I chose Paul for writing reasons, not the least of which is the high concept action adventure story he submitted as his logline, a fresh spin on a subject area Hollywood has had success with for decades.

If you have any questions or comments for Paul, feel free to post them in comments.
