Free Screenwriting Resource: Writers On Writing Quotes

I’m a big fan of writing quotes. Tack them up on my desk and use them for inspiration. Plus I use them all the time in my teaching. Who better to reflect on the craft than the writers themselves?

So every Monday at 10AM Eastern / 7PM Pacific for over 8years, I have posted a quote on the craft in my weekly series I call On Writing. Here are a few choice examples:

Richard Bach: “A professional writer is an amateur who didn’t quit.”

James Scott Bell: “Here is one simple rule to remember: Characters carry theme.”

“Plot is no more than footprints left in the snow
after your characters have run by
on their way to incredible destinations.”
 — Ray Bradbury

Leigh Brackett: “Plot is people. Human emotions and desires founded on the realities of life.”

Anthony Burgess: “A character has to be ignorant of the future, unsure about the past, and not at all sure what he’s supposed to be doing.”

That’s just a handful of quotes from writers whose last names begin with the letter B.
