Go On Your Own Quest — Week 2: Concept
“The Quest” has entered Week 2! And so did Go On Your Own Quest, an opportunity for anyone to follow the structure of “The Quest” to dig into screenwriting theory [Core — 8 weeks], figure out your story [Prep — 6 weeks], and write a first draft [Pages — 10 weeks]. It’s a 24-week immersion in the screenwriting process and you can do it here — for free!
This week, we are reflecting on the subject of Concept, mirroring the content the Questers are engaged with in Core II: Concept. They are working through six lectures I have written building off the 2nd Essential Screenwriting Principle: Concept = Hook.
For those of you who will plan to Go On Your Own Quest, we began our week-long discussion on Concept Monday asking this question: If there is one story concept of a movie that you could have created, which one would it be? You can see that discussion here. Tuesday another question: How do you generate story concepts? Are you intentional about it? Or do you just wait for an idea to hit you? You can see that commentary here. Yesterday’s question: How do you determine which story concept to write as a spec script? What criteria do you use to assess the quality of a story concept? You can read that discussion here. Today another question:
* How do you define “high concept”?
I’ll see you in comments for your thoughts on this critical question and [hopefully] a discussion that will enlighten everyone about the subject of Concept.
By the way, what would you think if a Hollywood screenwriter who had sold 4 spec scripts in 2 years decided to go on his on Quest? Check this out.
For background on “Go Into The Story: The Quest,” go here and here.
I will be teaching Core II: Concept through Screenwriting Master Class next week beginning Monday, August 6.
Coming up later today: Another “Dispatch From The Quest” in which we get to learn a bit about one of the Questers in his own words.
