“When I first started writing, I was a struggling actress, living on Hayworth Avenue, in a grungy little apartment behind Peanuts, the lesbian discotheque. My former boyfriend, now a successful writer, had helped me acquire gainful employment as a script reader at fifty bucks a pop. Several mornings, maybe one or two a month, I would awaken to the sound of someone playing a tenor sax. Once again, my view as of other people’s parking lots, but I also had a tree. And the sunlight would dapple in through the leaves and I would hear that mournful, beautiful sax… I built quite a fantasy life around the man playing that sax, but then it occurred to me, as I eyeballed everyone on the street, that the sax player might in fact be an old guy, or a woman, or a jerk. And that is how my first screenplay was born. What if…”
