Movie: “The Trouble With The Truth”
I’ve become aware of a new movie I wanted to share with the GITS community: The Trouble With The Truth, written and directed by Jim Hemphill. Here is the trailer:
The plot summary:
Musician and starving artist Robert reconsiders his own failed marriage to Emily after his daughter announces that she’s engaged.
So why am I featuring a small indie drama that doesn’t feature expensive CGI effects, explosions, vampires and zombies? Because the world needs more small indie dramas that don’t feature CGI effects, explosions, vampires and zombies.
The movie gets a fine review from F.X. Feeney in the Village Voice:
Two people revisiting their long-ago marriage over dinner should — in theory — make a better stage play than a movie, but John Shea, Lea Thompson, and writer-director Jim Hemphill defy this beautifully in The Trouble With the Truth. There isn’t a false note in either the dialogue or the performances. The characters as written and played have such intricate backstories, such complicated mixtures of motive, that their evening grows uniquely, movingly suspenseful.
Frank Scheck also laudatory in this THR review:
Not since My Dinner With Andre has a film consisting largely of a single conversation been such compelling viewing. While Jim Hemphill’s The Trouble With the Truth lacks the thematic heft of Louis Malle’s classic, this portrait of a middle-aged divorced couple reassessing their lives and relationship is the sort of subtle, grown-up drama all too often missing even from indie cinema. Featuring stellar performances by John Shea and Lea Thompson, the film will hopefully find its discerning audience.
As I understand it, The Trouble With The Truth, which is screening in NYC and LA [see schedule below], currently does not have distribution. So all you movie fans who complain about the dearth of good adult dramas, here’s your chance to make your voice heard. Here’s some information:
