Movies You Made: “Chillr”
Filmmaker Adam Neustadter is back with another short film called Chillr. Here are some production notes from Adam:
Chillr is a two-and-a-half minute comedy about a fictional new mobile app called Chillr — “the only non-sex-based mobile app that instantly connects chill dudes with other chill dudes in their area.”
We wanted to make something short and shareable and easy to digest. And since we were firing shots at the ridiculousness of dating/social app culture, we thought it might be funny to take it a step further — and launch the short on a website which made it look as though Chillr was a real app available for purchase. Thus, we got the idea to turn Chillr-the-short-film into Chillr-the-short-film-that’s-also-an-ad-for-Chillr.
We shot it in under three hours in Los Angeles and cut it in just a few days in New York. We built out a minimal and somewhat cryptic website that played the film and offered “app download” links that actually just took the user to a credits page. We timed the release to coincide with Tech Crunch Disrupt, one of the most anticipated technology conferences of the year, and Apple’s super-hyped product announcement for the iPhone 6 and the Apple Watch.
Our goal from the beginning was to score a Vimeo Staff Pick — but we were surprised by how many people thought it was really an ad for a real app! On our second day of sharing the film and website, we got word from Vimeo that they had indeed selected it as a Staff Pick. Pretty chill!

There are several other filmmakers who have contacted me about their short films, so it’s about time I ran another series of Movies You Made. Look for that in the near future.
