Movies You Made: “Elvis Prestwick”

For several months, I’ve been tagging a bunch of emails from filmmakers who have contacted me about their film projects, so I figured we should feature them this May. If you have a movie, either short-form or long, with which you were involved — writer, actor, director — please either email me or post details in comments. Happy to promote them on GITS.

Hello, Scott.

Thanks for the response to my comment on your “Movies You Made” thread yesterday.

As I said in that comment, I have written and produced a short film called “Elvis Prestwick”.

The film is about the life of a strait-laced office worker (Charlie McLeish) being transformed by meeting Elvis Presley during the only visit ever made to the UK by the King of Rock and Roll.

Given that I first had the idea for “Elvis Prestwick” in about October 1994, and post-production was finally completed in February 2011, I can quite honestly say that the film was over 16 years in the making! We entered many festivals after completion and were fortunate enough to be accepted in competition at four, including two in the US : the Palm Beach International Film Festival and the Indie Spirit Film Festival in Colorado Springs, both in 2012.

We were blessed with enormous talent on the film. On screen our Elvis, for example, Joe Bevan, not only does he get straight to the heart of his own character, he brings the character out in whoever he’s acting with. Or our McLeish, Mark Conway, who gives a really moving and funny performance. In one of the main supporting roles we had Tim Parker, who had just been in “The Rise and Fall of Little Voice” in the West End, and has recently opened on stage in “Once” in London! Off screen, our director Andrew Ryland has great TV and film location experience and we were lucky that he wanted to make “Elvis Prestwick” his first directing gig. Also, our DOP Jamie Kennerley had just worked on “The Fantastic Mr. Fox” and went on to “Frankenweenie” and our art director Tim Belcher’s first job had been laying cables on “The Lord of the Rings” in New Zealand and went from us to “The Social Network”!

I have written a couple of feature-length scripts but “Elvis Prestwick” is my only project to reach the screen SO FAR!

I could go on for hours about the film and everyone connected with it but I wouldn’t want to bore you!
