Movies You Made: “Little Moon”

For several months, I’ve been tagging a bunch of emails from filmmakers who have contacted me about their film projects, so I figured we should feature them this May. Today we feature the short film Little Moon from filmmaker Glen Simister. Background from Glen:

Hello Scott,

A few months back I wrote and directed a short film, Little Moon. I have just come out a film school, and have also written and directed five other short films. I’m moving to Los Angeles next month to get my writing/film career up and running, and I felt that I needed to stretch my visual and literary concepts further.

Sci-fi is a genre few independent filmmakers get to explore, yet I felt compelled to do so; yet, my budgets have never been kind enough for such a venture. To pull this off in a creative way and still explore the narrative structure in an off-dry humor kind of way, I decided to utilize the concept of raw storytelling (verbal), specifically how we interpret the stories that are told to us. We rarely see the whole picture when we’re told a tale, instead only getting a broad stroke, a small glimmer of comprehension. This was the reason for filming the sci-fi aspect of the film in silhouette — which is also a fascinating visual context; it leaves just enough out for your own imagination to take over.

Thank you for hosting this series, it’s great when the underbelly of the film world gets exposure. We live for our work reaching an audience.

We had a budget of only a few hundred dollars, but the crew, cast and I got together quickly to make this idea come alive. Everyone was in immediately once they read the script; everyone was really interested in pulling off the dry humor effectively. It was a challenge, but we’ve since shown it to many film enthusiasts at a local theater and everyone is quite fond of the little moments we were able to work into this small picture.
