Logline: An apartment renter so desperate for love pretends to own a cat in order to make contact with the gorgeous pet sitter finds himself in a debacle when his menacing landlord thinks he’s breaking the lease’s no-pet rule.

I asked each of the filmmakers in this month’s series to answer this question: What inspired you about this particular story to make it a movie? Here is Kim’s response:

SLY SYLVESTER started out as a single scene that I had written for an online screen tournament in 2009. Every tournament participant was assigned a prompt, which involved a protagonist who was stuck in a hard place between an antagonist determined to make him or her look bad and a love interest. As I was brainstorming, my cat hopped up onto my lap. My cat is notoriously antisocial and loathes being around visitors, so friends who never saw him would commonly joke that he actually didn’t exist. I started to think about why someone would pretend to have a pet and the story grew from there. When I think back on it now, I also had a number of people in my life who were doing some ridiculous things in an attempt to pursue another they were interested in romantically, so I’m sure that contributed to the story idea.
