Movies You Made: “Strangers”
March is Movies You Made month at Go Into The Story where we feature the work of some independent filmmakers.
Today: Strangers.
Production notes from the movie’s director writer-director Eric Yang:
Strangers is a story about two strangers whose plans for a one-night-stand take a turn when they decide to have conversation instead of sex. It stars Greg Winter from The Chris Isaak Show.
I’m a graduate of the American Film Institute Conservatory, and my principal team consisted entirely of AFI fellows
Strangers was written the day before the shoot after a spark of inspiration. We had less than an hour of rehearsal and prep time. It was a rushed production because we had an extremely limited amount of time at the location. During every minute of the shoot I was doubtful that we would be able to finish. But thanks to my amazing cinematographer, and a committed, hardworking crew, we beat the odds. It’s a testament to my actors’ skills that they were able to deliver performances that feel spontaneous and truthful despite the lack of time.

Here is the 15 minute film: Strangers.
I asked each of the filmmakers in this month’s series to answer this question: What inspired you about this particular story to make it a movie? Eric’s answer:
I’m fascinated by human behavior, especially actions driven by subconscious desires. Strangers is about two people who think they want sex, but sex is just a way for them to hide from what they really need: connection. I’ve never had an experience like the one in Strangers, but I’ve had some surprisingly enlightening conversations with complete strangers, and it’s made me wonder how many friendships or relationships we’ve missed because we failed to open up, or because we chose short-term gratification over real, long-lasting connection?
