Movies You Made: “Table 7”
For several months, I’ve been tagging a bunch of emails from filmmakers who have contacted me about their film projects, so I figured we should feature them this May. Today we feature the short film Table 7 from writer-director Marko Slavnic. Some background from Marko:
Hi Scott,
I’m a huge fan of your blog and will send you some loglines for the Quest. In the meantime, here is one of my shorts that’s gotten a lot of love on the internet. Vimeo staff pick and over 160,000 plays. Hope you like it as well.
I had the idea for this film years before we actually shot it. It really wasn’t a story at that point but just a “wouldn’t it be interesting if…” (I won’t give away the twist of the film). But I didn’t know how to make it into anything with a beginning, middle, and end. Eventually I came back to this and decided it was time to make it more than just a sentence on a post-it note. Originally it was much more complex, but due to budget constraints, which I think can be great for creativity sometimes, it came down to: what do we really need to tell this story? I just had enough money to rent the equipment and camera for one day, so we shot the restaurant sequences in the morning at my buddy’s restaurant before they opened, and the basement sequences in the evening. So ever since then I always jot down an idea I think has potential because I never know what could become of it down the line.
