Movies You Made: “Yellow Sky”

March is Movies You Made month at Go Into The Story where we feature the work of some independent filmmakers.

Today: Yellow Sky.

Production notes from writer-director Hector Cortez:

Yellow Sky is about a young woman who returns to her childhood home to retell of the destructive event that destroyed her town.

Filmed in Yucca Valley, CA
Filmed with a Canon T2i. Sound recorded on a Zoom H4n.
Filmed in a day with available light (the sun).
One man crew: me.
The actress (Katie Reed) has a a theater degree from UC Irvine.
The actor (Adam Petke) and myself both have a film degree from UCLA.

I hope to do more within the world of Yellow Sky. Have outlined an 8 episode web series, though I might attempt to write it as a 1-hour pilot instead.

Yellow Sky was also chosen as a “Notable Project” by Amazon Studios.

I asked each of the filmmakers in this month’s series to answer this question: What inspired you about this particular story to make it a movie? Here is Hector’s response:

I wanted to tell a big story on a small scale. I thought to myself, how can I make a disaster-type film without any money? How can I tell the larger story while also making a self-contained short film with only two characters? That’s when I came up with the post-disaster interview angle and everything fell into place soon after.
