Read and analyze the script for the hit Marvel superhero movie.

Reading scripts. Absolutely critical to learn the craft of screenwriting. The focus of this bi-weekly series is a deep structural and thematic analysis of each script we read. Our daily schedule:

Monday: Scene-By-Scene Breakdown
Tuesday: Plot
Wednesday: Characters
Thursday: Themes
Friday: Dialogue
Saturday: Takeaways

Today: Scene-By-Scene Breakdown. Here is my take on this exercise from a previous series of posts — How To Read A Screenplay:

After a first pass, it’s time to crack open the script for a deeper analysis and you can do that by creating a scene-by-scene breakdown. It is precisely what it sounds like: A list of all the scenes in the script accompanied by a brief description of the events that transpire.

For purposes of this exercise, I have a slightly different take on scene. Here I am looking not just for individual scenes per se, but a scene or set of scenes that comprise one event or a continuous piece of action. Admittedly this is subjective and there is no right or wrong, the point is simply to break down the script into a series of parts which you then can use dig into the script’s structure and themes.

The value of this exercise:

  • We pare down the story to its most constituent parts: Scenes.
  • By doing this, we consciously explore the structure of the narrative.
  • A scene-by-scene breakdown creates a foundation for even deeper analysis of the story.

This week: Avengers: Endgame. You can download the script here.

Screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.

Plot Summary: After the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the universe is in ruins due to the efforts of the Mad Titan, Thanos. With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers must assemble once more in order to undo Thanos’s actions and undo the chaos to the universe, no matter what consequences may be in store, and no matter who they face…

NOTE RE CHARACTER NAMES

- I refer to each hero by their real first name after their first mention.

- Given the time travel in this script, there’s more than one version of the same person on many occasions in this script. I’ve therefore left notes in italics to confirm what I call the non-2019 versions of characters.

CALLBACKS/NOTES

- This is the culmination of a 22-movie series, so some things in this film relate to events in other prior films.

After the end of some scenes, I’ve therefore left in notes re call-backs to other films and things in this film which relate to prior ones.

That said…

The Ghost of Stan Lee appears.

STAN LEE

You think I’d pass up a cameo in

this scene by scene? C’mon…. Let’s go!

ROLL MARVEL IDENT, and go to the next page:

(total 146)

Scene

1–2
EARTH AT POINT OF THE SNAP

- Clint Barton (Hawkeye)’s whole family disappears due to Thanos’ Snap. Clint’s left lost and alone.

2–5
SPACE, 22 DAYS LATER

- A weak Tony Stark (Iron Man), out of food and low on oxygen, is stranded with Nebula on spaceship “The Benetar”.

- Tony leaves a goodbye message for Pepper to find

- Later, sleeping Tony wakes to find Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel) outside the ship — they’re saved.

5–10
AVENGERS COMPOUND — TONY’S BACK BUT BEATEN

- Carol brings the Benetar to Earth and the Avengers Compound — and Steve Rogers (Captain America), Nat (Black Widow) and Bruce Banner (note: Banner still can’t become Hulk at this point).

- They commiserate that they failed to stop Thanos.

- Tony’s not only weak, he’s broken inside — since “I lost the kid” (Peter Parker — Spiderman).

- Rocket and Nebula sit and mourn their own losses.

- Now with Rhodey (War Machine) there too, they note:

· The many heroes/people they’ve lost (shown on screens)

· That the world is in disarray

· They don’t know where Thanos is.

- Thor’s depressed re his failure to stop Thanos and just sits there.

- Tony angry that couldn’t protect Earth. Has a go at the others for not listening. Tells Steve he’s done — then collapses from exhaustion.

- Carol wants to go kill Thanos. Nat says they should take him on as a team. And they need to find Thanos.

- Then Nebula says knows where Thanos is…

10–12
PLAN TO GET STONES BACK OFF THANOS AND UNDO SNAP

- Nebula talks of where Thanos said he would go- “The Garden”. Rocket checks — and finds the Infinity Stones were used for a Snap on a garden planet 2 days ago.

- They agree a mission:

FIND THANOS, GET STONES OFF HIM, PUT THINGS RIGHT.

- Steve — “lets go get that son of a bitch”

12–13
OFF ON A MISSION

- They strap into spaceship — travel — Carol says will recce the planet’s surface.

13
A MOMENT WITH CAPTAIN AMERICA

- A moment for Steve to admire a photo of Peggy Carter (the woman he still loves but had to leave behind in the past 70 years ago).

13–15
THE TEAM FAILS

- The team attack Thanos and subdue him BUT

- They find that he’s destroyed the Stones! NB also says using the stones nearly killed him. There’s no Stones — so no way to reverse the Snap.

- In impotent anger, Thor chops off Thanos’ head.

- THE MISSION HAS FAILED. THEY HAVE NO HOPE OF PUTTING THINGS RIGHT.

15–17
FIVE YEARS LATER — THE WORLD, AND A COUNSELING SESSION

- A half-empty world and a desolate New York.

- Steve leads a counseling session for survivors of the Snap — trying to be positive about things. Peggy’s mentioned again — as Steve says had to keep going after lost her 70 years ago.

- He says if they don’t do something with the world, they might as well all be dead.

17–18
THE RETURN OF ANT-MAN

- A rat stumbles over controls in the van which is now in a lock-up — and Scott Lang (Ant-Man) is shot from the machine back into reality.

- Scott stumbles through the post-Snap world and finds out what happens.

- Checks a memorial — worried his daughter was taken.

- Goes to his house — and finds his daughter, 5 years older.

Callback — following on from “Ant Man and The Wasp” end sequence:

Scott Lang had gone into the Quantum Realm in a Quantum Tunnel machine in the back of a van.

The Snap then happened and Hank Pym, Hope Van Dyne and Janet Van Dyne were dusted, leaving Scott trapped in the quantum realm and unaware that the Snap had happened.

19–23
THE REMAINS OF THE AVENGERS/SOMEONE AT THE DOOR

- Nat monitors various minor happenings with holograms of others — there’s nothing to do. Carol is still out covering the rest of the universe’s problems.

- After the others go, Rhodey’s hologram remains — and tells Nat stories of lots of bad guys being killed around the world — and that it’s definitely Clint doing the killings. Given what he’s doing, “part of me doesn’t want to find him”.

- Steve tries to cheer Nat up — trying to look on the bright side as ever. The consider both giving up “this job, this family”. They’re interrupted, as –

- Scott Lang rings on the front door — surprising them because everyone thought he was dead.

23–24
QUANTUM REALM EXPOSITION — AND A POSSIBLE PLAN

- Scott tells them about the Quantum Realm — about how time works differently there — whilst 5 years have passed, he was only there 5 hours.

- He thinks there’s a possible way to create time travel (and carry out what keeps hereon getting called a “Time Heist” to get the stones).

- They now need to speak to someone about how to do it…

24–29
VISITING THE STARK FAMILY TO DISCUSS TIME TRAVEL

- Tony Stark plays with his 4-year-old daughter Morgan, who’s snuck into his garage and taken a helmet for armour Tony’s working on (to give to his wife Pepper as a present).

- Steve, Nat and Scott arrive to speak to him.

- Tony schools them on the time heist plan’s flaws — saying it’s impossible. Scott notes Tony’s got a wife and daughter to lose — but the others lost important people and have a chance to save them. Tony still won’t help.

- As they leave, the others talk about needing someone else with a really big brain…

29–31
STILL GREEN, NO LONGER MEAN — “SMART HULK”

- In a diner they meet Smart Hulk (who tells oblivious Scott how in the 5 years he’s managed to become a balanced mix of The Hulk’s strength and Bruce Banner’s intellect).

- They persuade him to help with the science of perfecting time travel.

31–35
TONY CAN’T RESIST THE CALL — INVENTS TIME TRAVEL

- Tony at home sees a picture of Peter Parker — the kid he lost to the Snap…

- And so he can’t help himself. In his office he creates models — and renders a model which shows that they can pull off time travel and says “Shit”, just before daughter Morgan, who’s snuck into his office, repeats it.

- He takes her for juice pops and then to bed, where she tells him “I love you 3000”.

- After Morgan’s asleep, he goes to see Pepper. He confesses he’s solved time travel — which is amazing but terrifying. He has a dilemma. They debate — Tony thinks he could just hide away all the evidence… but then Pepper says “but could you rest”?

Plant for later payoff re line — “I love you 3000”

Plant for later payoff re line — “But could you rest?”

35–37
TESTING SCOTT’S NEW QUANTUM SUIT

- Smart Hulk tries to make the time travel work, but ends up turning Scott into a teen, old man then a baby before bringing him back as Scott.

37–39
TONY AND STEVE RECONCILE

- Tony turns up at the Avengers compound and finds Steve. He guesses correctly how they’ve been getting things wrong then says he’s fixed the problem.

- He makes peace with Steve, gives him back his shield and tells him he’s joining on the Time Heist.

39–40
GETTING READY FOR A TRIP

- Rocket and Nebula turn up in The Benetar spaceship. So does Rhodey.

- Smart Hulk and Rocket head off in the Benetar to…

40–45
PERSUADING (A LOT MORE) THOR

- New Asgard — where the surviving Asgardians live.

- They run into Valkyrie who indicates Thor’s hidden himself away to drink

- Entering Thor’s home, they find the depressed Thor has let himself go and is a slobby drunk.

- When Hulk mentions Thanos, Thor shows he’s still traumatised by his failure and is afraid. He won’t go with Rocket and Hulk — until Rocket mentions they have beer on the ship…

45–47
PERSUADING CLINT HE’S NOT RONIN

- A ninja takes out a whole group of Yakuza — then finds Nat standing behind him. He takes off his disguise — it’s Clint.

- Clint says she shouldn’t be there. Nat says there’s a potential way to undo everything. Clint doesn’t want to have hope. Nat says she’s sorry she couldn’t give it to him sooner. He holds her hand in comradeship.

47–49
A LESSON RE PYM PARTICLES AND TIME TRAVEL

- Scott tells them about Pym Particles which power the shrinking to the micro-size required to enter the quantum realm — and especially they have enough for one trip each way — and one test.

- Smart Hulk once again has to school others on how time travel works — and it’s NOT how every time travel film works. “If you travel to the past, that past becomes your present, and your former present has become the past, which now can’t be changed by your new future!”

49–51
CLINT TESTS TIME TRAVEL

- Clint tests the time travel device — and finds himself home again. Picks up the baseball mitt we saw at beginning, hears his family again, calls for them, just before he’s brought back to the present…

- He lands back on the time travel pad — with the mitt. Time travel works and they can do this.

51–55
PLANNING A TIME HEIST — WHO GETS STONES (AND WHEN)

All of them in a room, discussing plan whilst pics of each infinity stone are on the screens around them. They need to work out where they go in the past to get each stone back.

Exposition to establish stone locations re Time Heist:

- Thor talks of the Aether (with the Reality Stone in) being on Asgard at one point — but he’s drunk and all over the place. And down.

- Rocket says Peter Quill (Starlord) originally stole the Orb (with the Power Stone in) from Morag

- Nebula says Thanos found the Soul Stone on Vormir — a dominion of death where Thanos killed Gamora

- Tony, Nat and Smart Hulk talk of Time Stone — and that Steven Strange (Doctor Strange) had nice place in New York — and Nat realises that at the right point, there are three Infinity Stones (Time, Space and Mind) in New York at the same time…

55–57
GETTING READY TO COMMIT — CAP’S TEAM TALK

GO INTO THE TIME VORTEX TO THEIR RESPECTIVE MISSIONS

- THREE TEAMS — WITH ONLY ONE SHOT TO GET ALL SIX STONES. Steve gives an inspirational speech to rally them — and they’re off, through the quantum realm to their separate missions…

MISSIONS ARE NOT SPECIFICALLY STATED IN THE SCENE ABOVE — BUT SO FOLLOW SEPARATE MISSIONS IN SCENE BY SCENE:

MISSION 1 — Tony, Scott, Steve, Smart Hulk

Tony, Scott, Steve and Smart Hulk must go to 2012 NEW YORK to:

a. GET SPACE STONE (in Tesseract)

b. GET MIND STONE (in Loki’s sceptre)

c. GET TIME STONE (in Eye of Agamotto)

MISSION 2 — Thor and Rocket

Thor and Rocket must go to 2013 ASGARD to:

- GET REALITY STONE (in Aether inside Jane Foster during events of Thor 2, just before Thor’s mother is killed).

MISSION 3 — Rhodey, Nebula, Nat and Clint

Team must to go to 2014 MORAG after which split up so:

a. Still on MORAG, Rhodey and Nebula must

GET POWER STONE (in Orb)

b. After flying to VORMIR on the Benetar (currently miniaturised to go through Quantum Realm), Clint and Nat must

GET SOUL STONE — though they don’t know where it is — or what’s required to get it…

57–59
MISSION 1 — BACK IN THE 2012 BATTLE OF NEW YORK (DURING THE FIRST “AVENGERS” FILM, 5 YEARS BEFORE EVENTS OF “DOCTOR STRANGE”)

Note re character names:

Given that here, given the time travel, TWO versions of the SAME person are seen in some scenes:

- I refer to characters originally there during those events as “A1 [character name]”

e.g. “A1 Hulk uses A1 Loki as a play toy, smacking him around on the ground, then calls him a puny god”.

- The same applies for any other characters who did not physically appear in the first Avengers film but in this film are shown as being there at the time (e.g. Agent Sitwell, Director Pierce, Brock Rumlow).

Right — back to the scenes…

- Team 1 discuss their plan — The Time Stone’s one way from their location, the Space and Mind Stones in the other.

- TIME STONE MISSION

Smart Hulk sees A1 Hulk smash so, doing some half-hearted smashing to blend in, he heads for Doctor Strange’s address (The Sanctum Sanctorum).

- At the Sanctum Santorum he finds The Ancient One, not Strange.

- When he goes to take the Time Stone from her, she incapacitates his physical form and knocks an ASTRAL BRUCE BANNER out of him — and suggests they start again…

Callback re “Doctor Strange”:

The Ancient One is the prior owner of the Eye of Agamotto, who still has it in 2012 at the time of Avengers.

Steven Strange won’t take possession of the Eye until 2017 during the events of “Doctor Strange”.

59–62
MISSION 2 — BACK IN 2013 ASGARD (DURING “THOR 2”)

REALITY STONE MISSION

- Rocket recaps the mission — he has a device that will extract the Reality Stone from Jane.

- One problem, though: Thor doesn’t want to deal with this. He wants to drink instead — and when he sees his mother FRIGGA — and recalls that this is the day she’s going to die… now he really doesn’t want to do this.

- Rocket lectures him — they’ve all lost people — but tells him to pull himself together to they can save the Snapped people they can still save.

- Thor indicates he’s back on board — but when Rocket goes, Thor flees. Rocket’s alone.

62–63
MISSION 3A AND 3B — BACK IN 2014 MORAG (“GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY”)

- Rhodey, Nebula, Clint and Nat land on Morag.

SOUL STONE MISSION

- Nat and Clint get on the Benetar and head off for Vormir. They share a moment on the spacecraft ride, noting it’s a “Long way from Budapest” (a mysterious past mission, referred to in various prior films).

POWER STONE MISSION

- Nebula and Rhodey wait for Quill to turn up so they can follow him to the Reality Stone.

- Nebula suggests they hide since at this point in time, the past, 2014 versions of Thanos, Gamora and Nebula are nearby, also looking for the stones.

- Rhodey asks Nebula where the 2014 version of Nebula is…

Note re fact we’re now also dealing with past, 2014 versions of Thanos, Nebula and Gamora as well as the current ones:

From hereon in, I therefore call:

- 2014 Thanos “Past Thanos”

- 2014 Nebula “Bad Nebula”

- 2014 Gamora “Gamora” — since present one dead/not in film

63–66
PAST THANOS FINDS SOMETHING’S UP WITH BAD NEBULA

- Past Nebula is busy killing Thanos’ enemies — but still needs a hand from Gamora, which she resents.

- Gamora says Past Thanos has found out that there’s an Infinity Stone on Morag.

- Past Thanos kills enemies himself as Gamora and Bad Nebula worry what would happens if Past Thanos gets all the stones.

- Past Thanos comes back to the ship and says he’s located the Power Stone — just before Bad Nebula cries due to pain in her head — and projects a Hologram of Rhodey’s conversation with Nebula about the stones.

- Thanos is intrigued and wants Bad Nebula brought to his ship.

66–78
2012 NEW YORK, PART II

- Tony gets to the Avengers Tower penthouse and spies on the A1 Avengers who have just defeated A1 Loki and have retrieved the Tesseract and Sceptre.

MIND STONE MISSION:

- A1 Steve confirms SHIELD are coming to get the Sceptre.

- Tony sees A1 Nat with the Sceptre.

- A1 Nat gives Sceptre to A1 Agent Sitwell.

- A1 Agent Sitwell takes it into an Elevator with A1 Brock Rumlow

Notes of relevance re HYDRA — and their members Agent Sitwell, Brock Rumlow, and Alexander Pierce:

- In prior films Agent Sitwell was confirmed as an agent of SHIELD and supposedly on our heroes’ side.

- Following battle of NY, in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” it was found that Agent Sitwell and associate Brock Rumlow aka Crossbones were actually secretly agents of HYDRA (an authoritarian society that want world domination)

- Members of the order signalled they were fellow members by whispering in the others’ ear “HAIL HYDRA!”

- Separately in “Winter Soldier” another HYDRA operative was revealed — Alexander Pierce, Secretary of the powerful World Security Council.

- A1 Steve says he’s heading down to coordinate search and rescue.

SPACE STONE MISSION:

- A1 Tony puts the Tesseract in a case.

- Tony flicks a miniaturized Scott onto the case.

- A1 Thor escorts A1 Loki out into the elevator with the other A1 Avengers and the Tesseract. They tell A1 Hulk he’s too heavy and has to take the stairs. A1 Hulk grumps off down the stairs.

MIND STONE MISSION:

- Tony tells Steve about Sitwell, Rumlow and 8 other men in the elevator with the Sceptre whilst he flies down

- Steve gets into the elevator with them (a mirror of the scene in CA: Winter Soldier where Cap has to right Rumlow and men in a lift). They ready for the fight when Steve says he wants a sceptre — but Steve gets the sceptre this time by simply whispering “Hail Hydra” to a surprised Sitwell, Rumlow and the others.

- Steve happily exits the elevator with the Scepter.

SPACE STONE MISSION:

- An unhappy A1 Hulk continues to lumber down — “so MANY STAIRS!”

- In the lobby, Tony’s disguised as a SWAT Trooper. Tells Scott to get into A1 Tony’s “RT” — the metal arc reactor in his chest.

- Alexander Pierce enters the lobby and tries to take Loki and The Tesseract.

- Tony tells Scott to pull out a wire in A1’s RT to give him a mild cardiac event. Scott yanks it and down goes A1 Tony.

- In the confusion, Scott shoves the case to Tony who is getting away…

- …only to be smacked in the face with a door as A1 Hulk opens it, causing the Tessract to be spilled out in front of captive A1 Loki.

- Not believing his luck, A1 Loki grabs the Tesseract and uses it to teleport away with it.

THE SPACE STONE MISSION HAS FAILED.

MIND STONE MISSION:

- Getting away, Steve finds he’s standing in front of A1 Steve, who thinks Steve is the absconding Loki. Steve eventually manages to distract A1 Steve by telling him his best friend Bucky is still alive then tapping him with the Scepter to incapacitate him. (note: I really hope you’ve watched Captain America: The First Avenger and Captain America: The Winter Solider. If for some reason you’re reading this and really don’t mind about spoilers: Cap had a friend called Bucky who he thought died (CA:TFA) Bucky wasn’t — taken and resurrected as a warrior called the Winter Soldier (CA:TWS)

THE MIND STONE MISSION HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL.

TIME STONE MISSION:

- The Ancient One is concerned that by giving up the Time Stone she’ll risk her own reality — and that if Bruce takes it, he’ll still have to survive in order to bring it back. But when Bruce says that Strange deliberately gave Thanos the Time Stone when it was his duty to protect it, The Ancient One deduces he did it for good reason — so gives Bruce the Time Stone.

THE TIME STONE MISSION HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL.

79–80
2014 — PAST THANOS REALISES FUTURE NEBULA’S IN HIS TIMELINE

- Past Thanos plugs Nebula into a diagnostic — and finds that a future version of Nebula — Nebula — is sharing her conscious with Bad Nebula, and that the future Nebula is on Morag.

- He’s told he can access what Nebula can see.

- Bad Nebula projects images of the Avengers from earlier discussing the plan to collect the stones — and sees Nebula there with them.

- Knowing there’s two Nebulas, he says to set course for Morag…

81–85
BACK IN 2013 ASGARD PART II — GET THE REALITY STONE (AETHER)

REALITY STONE MISSION:

- Thor, hiding away, is found by his mother Frigga. She has powers which allow her to realise this is Thor from the future, not the present.

- Rocket sneaks up on Jane with the device to extract the Reality Stone

- Frigga confronts Thor’s feelings of failure — tells him “Everyone fails at “who they’re supposed to be… the measure of a person, of a hero, is how well they succeed at being who they are”.

Note: This is a plant line to be paid off later.

Thor tells her he’s missed his mum.

- Rocket tears through the halls of Asgard — yelling to Thor that he’s got the Aether.

- Thor wants to tell his mum about her impending death — but she stops him. Tells him to go be the man he’s meant to be. And eat a salad.

- Thor tells him to wait a moment before they go, holds out his hand… and his hammer MJOLNIR comes to him. Thor’s relieved — that he can still use it means he’s still worthy.

- He says goodbye to his mum — then they’re off.

THE REALITY STONE MISSION HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL.

BACK IN 2014 MORAG PART II

POWER STONE MISSION

- Peter Quill dances like he did at the beginning of Guardians of the Galaxy — just before Rhodey knocks him out. Nebula takes Quill’s electronic lock pick.

- They break into the temple vault. Nebula retrieves the Orb with the Power Stone in it.

- They set to jump back — Rhodey does with the Power Stone

THE POWER STONE MISSION IS SUCCESSFUL

But

- Nebula doubles up in pain before she can jump back — and projects an image of Past Thanos…

87–89
2014 — PAST THANOS KNOWS PLAN IS TO UNDO WHAT HE DID IN THE FUTURE — CAPTURES NEBULA

- Past Thanos sees Bad Nebula play a hologram of the moments before his death — when he confirms he’d done what he set out to do and then destroyed the stones.

- Past Thanos realises the Avengers are trying to undo something he’s done in the future.

- Past Thanos’ Henchman Ebony Maw says Bad Nebula is a traitor and goes to kill her.

- Bad Nebula begs for mercy saying she wouldn’t betray him

- Past Thanos stops his henchman and tells Bad Nebula she will have the chance to prove she wouldn’t betray him.

- On Morag, Nebula realises Past Thanos knows what they’re up to — tries to tell Nat and Clint using a communicator — but then Thanos’ ship’s tractor beam pulls her and her escape pod up to it.

89–91
2012 NEW YORK, PART III

SPACE STONE MISSION — NEW PLAN B

- Steve, Tony and Scott discuss the failed plan.

- Scott says they:

- Don’t know where the Tesseract is;

- If they did, only have enough Pym particles for one journey in time — and would need two to go there and back.

- Tony realises there’s a place — a military installation called Camp Lehigh — which at one point in time in the 1970s had both the Tesseract and a handy supply of Pym Particles…

- Tony and Steve travel in time — a new mission to get both the Space Stone and Pym Particles in the 1970s

92–100
TONY AND STEVE GO GET THE TESSERACT AND PYM PARTICLES

- 1970s base — inn disguise, they find a secret location on the base site

- They ride down in a lift, avoiding the gaze of a Female Shield Agent

- Once out, they split up. Steve’s after the Pym Particles, Tony’s after the Tesseract.

SPACE STONE MISSION

- Tony uses his tech to find the Tesseract and put it in a case… then finds himself face to face with his own father — Howard Stark.

PYM PARTICLES MISSION

- Steve distracts a younger Hank Pym (seen later in Ant Man films — and inventor of Pym Particles) so he leaves his lab unattended — then sneaks into the lab to take the Pym Particles.

SPACE STONE MISSION

- Tony and Howard talk about fatherhood — Howard’s wife is pregnant with Tony at this point — and Tony, now he’s a father, is able to talk about the subject.

- PYM PARTICLES MISSION

- Steve finds and takes the Pym Particles.

- On the way out, he sees the female Shield Agent with guards looking for him and Tony, so he ducks into a side office… only to find it’s the office of the girl he had to leave behind over 70 years ago — Peggy Carter.

- She’s still got a picture of Steve on her desk — she never forgot him.

- She comes into the room next door, and he watches her longingly.

SPACE STONE MISSION

- Howard and Tony discuss baby names. Howard asks Tony for parenting advice — and they bond.

- Tony gets that one further moment of time with his dad he never thought he’d get.

- Steve’s out and indicates he’s got Pym Particles. Tony indicates likewise.

SPACE STONE MISSION (PLAN B) SUCCESSFUL

100–102
FUTURE NEBULA PLEADS TO PAST GAMORA, PAST NEBULA HATCHES A PLAN

- Bad Nebula beats up Nebula — and takes her “Space/Time GPS” which allows her to find her way back to the current day Avengers Compound.

- Gamora enters — Nebula pleads with her, reminding her that in the future Thanos finds where the Soul Stone is — and asks Nebula if she wants to know how he did that (hinting at Gamora’s death in Infinity War- since in Infinity War Nebula knew not only where the Soul Stone was — but what the price was that someone had to pay to obtain it)

- Bad Nebula takes the orange headplate from Nebula…

- Bad Nebula presents herself to Past Thanos — disguised as Nebula — and gives Past Thanos Nebula’s timejump device

102–106
BACK IN 2014 — VORMIR AND A SACRIFICE

SOUL STONE MISSION

- Nat and Clint get to the mountain

- The Red Skull appears and tells them (as he did in Infinity War with Thanos) that to get the Soul Stone, the person must leave behind that which they love — a soul for a soul.

- Clint and Nat debate what to do — come to conclusion Red Skull’s not lying. If they don’t sacrifice, billions stay dead… they both say they know who’s going to sacrifice themselves — then realise both of them are offering to do it.

- They have a fight, both of them trying to save the other and sacrifice themselves instead.

- The fight ends with Nat saving Clint — and then telling him to let her go so she can fall from the cliff.

- Nat pushes herself away and falls to her death.

- Clint wakes up holding the Soul Stone — distraught.

THE SOUL STONE MISSION IS SUCCESSFUL — AT THE COST OF NAT’S LIFE

107–109
ALL BACK TO 2019 — BUT WITHOUT NAT

- The heroes return — with all six Infinity Stones. But when they see Clint drop to his knees, they realise Nat’s dead.

- Later they debate using the stones to bring her back — but Clint says it’s irreversible.

- Smart Hulk says they’re going to have to make her sacrifice worth it.

109–113
( 2nd SNAP 2.01 INTO FILM)
THE SECOND SNAP — AND AN UNWELCOME VISITOR

- Tony creates a new Iron Man Gauntlet which holds all the six Infinity Stones in it. They debate who’s going to be the one to Snap — ending in Hulk reasoning why it has to be him.

- In the meantime Bad Nebula — who’s come back with them — reactivates the Quantum Tunnel machine at the present day Avengers Compound…

- Smart Hulk’s ready. Tony reminds him to bring back everyone taken by the prior snap today, not 5 years ago.

- HULK PUTS ON THE GAUNTLET AND, DESPITE THE PAIN, SNAPS HIS FINGERS TO BRING EVERYONE BACK.

- He collapses to the ground, his arm that had the Gauntlet on it burned and useless, showing the effect Snapping has on the user again.

- The Gauntlet falls off.

- Bad Nebula takes off her glove — unlike Nebula (who burned her arm retrieving the Power Stone on Morag) her arm is intact. She hits a switch… and something approaches through the Quantum Tunnel…

- Clint hears his phone going — and his wife is calling. Ant-Man smiles and says “I think we’ve done it” just before Hulk sees THANOS’ SHIP IN THE SKIES, FIRING MISSILES WHICH PULVERISE THE AVENGERS COMPOUND.

- PAST THANOS BEAMS TO THE GROUND. Bad Nebula greets him. He tells her to fetch the Infinity Stones whilst he waits.

113–116
TRAPPED IN THE RUBBLE

- Deep down in a crumbling basement, Rhodey climbs from his broken War Machine armour and digs out a trapped Rocket.

- Hulk’s holding up the building with his one good arm — just before river water floods into where they are…

- Miniaturised Scott Lang, elsewhere amidst the rubble, hears Rocket and Rhodey’s cries for help over the comms.

116
CLINT FINDS THE GAUNTLET

- Clint in an access tunnel finds the Gauntlet and the Stones! BUT

- then finds dozens of Past Thanos’ monsters are coming for him.

- He grabs the Gauntlet and runs.

116–118
STEVE, TONY AND THOR — SPOILING FOR A FIGHT

- Steve’s out cold in the rubble.

- Tony brings him round and hands him his shield.

- They climb out to find Past Thanos, calmly seated and waiting. For them.

- Seeing he doesn’t have the stones, they go to take him on to keep it that way, even though it’s probably a trap.

- Thor calls both his old hammer Mjolnir and new axe Stormbreaker into each hand. They head into battle.

- They confront Past Thanos — who tells them that since they’ll always resist, his plan to kill half of life wasn’t good enough — so once he has the stones, he’ll restart the whole universe from scratch so the lives in it don’t know to rebel.

- In unison, STEVE, TONY AND THOR TAKE ON THANOS FOR THE FATE OF THE UNIVERSE.

118–119
SISTERS REUNITED

- Gamora finds Nebula in her prison — and asks how they both change in the future.

- Nebula tells how they end up friends.

- Gamora holds out her hand and says they can still stop past Thanos.

- Nebula takes her sister’s hand.

119–122
ESCAPE FROM THE RUBBLE, CLINT CHASED, THE FIGHT CONTINUES

HULK, ROCKET AND RHODEY

- They’re in trouble — Hulk can’t hold the ceiling much longer.

- Minaturised Scott heads to help them

CLINT PURSUED

- The outriders chase Clint through the tunnels… he climbs out of an access shaft after killing them, to find…

- Bad Nebula — who takes the Gauntlet and tells Past Thanos she has the Stones. She’s goes to kill Clint — but Gamora and Nebula enter just in time.

- Nebula tries to persuade Bad Nebula not to attack them, but Bad Nebula won’t change — fires — and Nebula shoots her past self dead.

THANOS FIGHTS BACK

- Tony, Thor and Steve give Thanos their best shot BUT

- so does Thanos in return, knocking Tony out cold.

HULK, ROCKET AND RHODEY

- In the flooding chamber, they have seconds left to live!

- The water hits the ceiling…

- THANOS ON EDGE OF VICTORY

- Steve gets knocked aside.

- Thanos pummels Thor — and is about to push Stormbreaker into Thor’s chest when…

- … someone picks up Thor’s Hammer. Who is it? “The only other man worthy enough to wield it” — Steve. Thor — “I knew it!”

Callback to Avengers 2: Age of Ultron:

There’s a scene where each Avenger tried to see if anyone could move Thor’s hammer. No one could — save that when Steve tried, the hammer shifted slightly.

It seems wasn’t trying then. He is now..

122–123
WHOMSOEVER HOLDS THIS HAMMER, IF HE BE WORTHY…

- Steve pummels Thanos with his shield and Mjolnir, and bringing down lightning attacks on Past Thanos BUT

- Thanos counter attacks and beats Steve, disarming him of Mjolnir and breaking his shield.

- Thanos, his forces behind him, tells Steve that he’s going to enjoy the violence he’s about to do to Steve’s planet.

- Steve gets up and stands in defiance and starts walking towards Thanos, up against impossible odds. “One man against thousands. All alone”… BUT THEN

123–124
THE RETURN OF THE FALLEN

- Steve’s comm crackles — a voice — of Sam Wilson (The Falcon) — taken by the Snap, now restored — appearing through a portal conjured by Doctor Strange.

- Several more portals appear — out pour all the heroes thought lost from the first snap, now ready to take on Thanos.

- Scott — now turning to Giant size, bursts out of the ground with ROCKET, HULK AND RHODEY (now in his Cosmic Iron Patriot Suit).

- Steve summons Mjolnir to him, and with an army restored by his side, he starts the final battle, with the call, “AVENGERS… ASSEMBLE!”

124–126
THE BATTLE FOR THE FATE OF THE UNIVERSE BEGINS

- The two armies race towards each other — for the final fight…

- Initial fights break out between heroes and enemy forces

- Peter Parker saves Tony from an enemy — Tony’s really happy to see he’s alive again and hugs him.

- Quill has a moment when he sees Gamora — though since she’s the earlier Gamora, she knees him in the balls rather than hugging him back.

126–127
A GAME PLAN RE THE GAUNTLET

- Clint asks what to do with the Gauntlet — Hulk reminds them that they have to get them back in time. When Tony notes Past Thanos destroyed their time portal, Scott reminds them it isn’t the only time machine — and sounds the alarm on his van — IN THE MIDDLE OF ENEMY TERRITORY.

NEW MISSION PLAN — GET THE GAUNTLET TO THE VAN

- Scott get the van working (goes with Hope (Wasp))

- The others will get the Gauntlet to him

127
TONY AND DR. STRANGE

- Tony asks if his is the version of events in which they succeed.

Strange says if he tells Tony, it won’t happen.

Callback to Infinity War:

Dr. Strange looked into possible futures using the Time Stone — and said there was only one possible future in 14 million where they succeed in defeating Thanos.

127–130
THE ENEMY TRIES TO GET THE GAUNTLET

GET GAUNTLET TO VAN MISSION

- Past Thanos’ henchman Ebony Maw sees Clint running with the Gauntlet and alerts Past Thanos AND

- The troops besiege Clint BUT

- T’Challa (Black Panther) takes it off him and keeps going…

GET VAN WORKING MISSION

- Scott and Hope get to the van BUT The ignition’s broken so Scott’s going to have to hotwire it

GET GAUNTLET TO VAN MISSION

- T’Challa races through the enemies with the Gauntlet BUT

Past Thanos knocks him to his feet and the Gauntlet tumbles away from him

- Wanda (Scarlet Widow) places herself between Past Thanos and the Gauntlet and engages him in combat

- T’Challa goes for the Gauntlet BUT

Ebony Maw manipulates the ground to pull the Gauntlet toward him BUT

T’Challa grabs it, but is still pulled towards Ebony Maw BUT

- Peter Parker grabs the Gauntlet off him and gets closer to the van BUT

Enemies surround him and attack — he’s besieged!

- Wanda takes the fight to Thanos and is winning BUT

Past Thanos orders Ebony Maw to get Thanos’ ship to rain fire down on the battlefield — even though his own troops are still on it!

- The Ship opens fire DEMOLISHING THE BATTLEFIELD.

130
ALL HOPE IS LOST
ON THE DEFENSIVE, THEN ALL HOPE IS LOST

- The barrage destroys many on the battlefield

- The barrage forces Wanda to defend herself rather than continuing to attack Past Thanos

- The Barrage opens the riverbank and threatens to flood the battlefield, Dr. Strange and the other sorcerers have to hold the floodwater back

- Peter Parker and the Gauntlet is about to be overwhelmed by enemy forces BUT

Steve hurls Mjolinir — Peter catches a ride on it then with Valkyrie, BUT

the ship’s cannon fire knocks both Peter and Valkyrie to the ground

- The ship’s fire is going to KILL THEM ALL. THE FIRE IS CLOSING IN ON THEM WITH NO ESCAPE. ALL IS LOST…

Note: P130 — They even write “ALL HOPE IS LOST” in the script. In underline.

130–132
A LATE GUEST TO THE PARTY — AND GAUNTLET PLAN B

- … but then the ship’s guns stop firing downwards! The heroes wonder why.

- The guns then retrain and fire into the atmosphere at an approaching object a fiery light…

- It’s Carol! — so powerful that she punches straight through the ship, disabling it.

- It crashes into the waters below!

- Carol lands, tired from the effort, her light fading.

GET THE VAN WORKING MISSION

- Scott fixing the Quantum Tunnel — says he’s nearly ready and asks where the Gauntlet is.

GET GAUNTLET TO VAN MISSION

- Carol gets the Gauntlet off Peter.

- Peter asks how she’s going to get to the van

- Carol has THE WOMEN OF MARVEL — Wanda, Okoye, Gamora, Nebula, Valkyrie, Hope, Shuri, Pepper and Mantis — walk up behind her…

- Okoye says “she’s got help” — and they head for the van…

132
THE WOMEN OF MARVEL CHARGE FOR THE VAN

- The Women of Marvel blast towards the Van BUT

- Past Thanos sees their intent — and the Van

- Each of the women helps the group get closer BUT

Thanos heads for the van with a henchman’s spear (note: in film think it’s just the remains of his sword which Wanda broke)

- Carol gets close to the van, nearly there…

- Scott’s done it — the Quantum Tunnel opens up at the back of the Van! Now Carol just needs to get into it…

- Carol’s just yards from the van, about to get there BUT

Thanos throws the spear — and DESTROYS THE VAN.

133
BATTLE FOR THE GAUNTLET

- Carol’s thrown by the explosion and drops the Gauntlet on open ground.

- The heroes see the Gauntlet’s position BUT

So does Thanos.

- They all scramble for the Gauntlet BUT

Past Thanos knocks Thor, Tony then Steve aside..

and GETS HIS HAND IN THE GAUNTLET!

- Carol grabs the Gauntlet and stops him closing his fist BUT

Past Thanos pulls the Power Stone from the Gauntlet and uses it to send Carol flying!

“Nothing stands in Thanos’ way”. “THE AVENGERS ARE GOING TO LOSE”.

- And that’s then Tony sees Strange holding up a finger to indicate one. One in 14 million possibilities…

133–134
A SNAP, AND A SACRIFICE

- Past Thanos puts the Power Stone back in the Gauntlet, the energy surges through him — BUT

- Tony grabs the Gauntlet! He holds it open, his nanotech surging over the Gauntlet…

- Past Thanos knocks Tony aside

- Past Thanos snaps his fingers, saying “I AM… INEVITABLE” BUT

- nothing happens! The stones are gone

- and form on Tony’s armor as another Gauntlet.

- Tony, though in agony, replies… “AND I… AM IRON MAN” — AND SNAPS HIS FINGERS.

- Bright light covers everything.

- Thanos’ enemies are dusted just like people were at the end of Infinity War.

- And Past Thanos has enough time to sit down and accept his fate, before he turns to dust as well.

134
QUILL AND GAMORA

- A quick moment — Quill turns to Gamora but finds she’s gone

- it’s not clear if she’s been dusted or run…

134–135
A WIN — BUT AT WHAT COST?

- Tony lies, withered and blackened by the power of the snap. He’s DYING.

- Rhodey gets there first — knows it’s too late.

- Peter joins them — tells Tony they won. Rhodey moves him to one side.

- Pepper gets there — realises Tony is dying. She tells them they’re going to be ok.

- She kisses him, saying “You can rest now”..

- and when she pulls back… Tony’s died.

Payoff line — “You can rest now”

A callback to earlier in film when Tony and Pepper discuss whether he should tell others he can make time travel work.

Tony said could hide info but she responds: “but will you be able to rest?”

135–137
THE AFTERMATH — AND TONY’S MESSAGE OF HOPE

- Over a V.O. of Tony leaving a message (recorded the day before the Time Heist started) over a montage of reunions for the others:

Montage:

Peter sees his friends at school again

Scott sits with Hope and daughter Cassie

Clint is reunited with his family

T’Challa embraces Suri and his mother

The V.O.:

- Tony says maybe don’t always get a happy ending. Hope if play message back, it’s to celebrate. Hopes families are reunited.

- Mulls over his own chances of dying, and notes that “that’s the hero gig, right? Part of the journey is the end”.

- … and now the source of the V.O voice — in Tony’s house, a Hologram of Tony emanates from an Iron Man helmet ass Pepper, daughter Morgan, his friend Happy Hogan, Rhodey, Thor, Steve, Smart Hulk and Clint watch on — all in funeral clothes. When Tony talks, he seems to especially address his daughter Morgan.

The VO:

- Tony says everything is going to work out the way it’s supposed to.

- Seeming to look towards Morgan, Tony Stark’s final words: “I LOVE YOU 3000”

- then Tony’s image is gone.

Payoff line from earlier when Morgan told Tony “I love you 3000”.

136–138
PROOF THAT TONY STARK HAS A HEART

- Pepper and Morgan take an old Chest-Based Arc Reactor ringed with flowers and rests the flowers on the water by their home.

- On the Arc Reactor is written “Proof That Tony Stark has a Heart”

- The many heroes gather to mourn him — including the revived Nick Fury and Maria Hill.

Call back to first film and nice nod to Tony’s arc through the series:

Callback — This is the original Arc Reactor Tony built in the first ever MCU film “Iron Man”. Pepper then had the inscription etched on it then gave it to make a point to Tony — who at that point was far more selfish.

Tony’s arc Tony’s arc across the films takes him from completely self-obsessed to being self-sacrificing for others… proof that he has a heart, indeed.

138
REMEMBERING NAT — AND VISION

Clint and Wanda later look out over the lake.

Wanda reassures him “She knows. They both do” (not stated but probably referring to Vision’s loss too)

138
HAPPY CONSOLES MORGAN

Happy looks after Morgan — who’s hungry and wants cheeseburgers. Happy recalls her dad liked cheeseburgers too. Happy says he’ll get her all the cheeseburgers she wants.

Callback:

In Iron Man, the first thing Tony wants after he escapes his captors is a cheeseburger.

139–140
THOR’S NEW LIFE AND A SURPRISE FOR VALKYRIE

- Thor’s told Valkyrie he’s going travelling — she asks when he’s coming back but reveals he isn’t — and anoints her the new ruler of Asgard.

- He says “It’s time to be who I am, rather than who I’m supposed to be. And a leader is who you are”.

- She accepts the role — and plans a lot of changes.

- They shake hands.

- She asks what Thor will do — he hasn’t got a clue — but he has got a ride… on the Benetar with the Guardians Of The Galaxy.

Payoff line here re earlier advice from mother Frigga on Asgard:

“Everyone fails at “who they’re supposed to be”, Thor. The measure of a person, of a hero, is how well they succeed at being who they are”.

140–141
THOR HITCHES A RIDE WITH THE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

- Thor immediately acts in charge, rubbing on Quill’s insecurities

- It doesn’t help that the other Guardians suggest they should fight for the leadership.

- They both laugh nervously and Thor says that’s not necessary — “everyone knows who’s in charge”.

- They don’t. Even Quill has to check — “Me, right?”.

- They blast off into space.

Callback:

To similar scene of this type in Infinity War when they find Thor — when everyone thinks Thor’s amazing and Quill’s insecure about it(e.g. Drax: “He’s not a dude. You’re a dude. He’s a MAN”).

141–146
STEVE GETS A LIFE…

- Steve, Hulk, Bucky and Sam gather at a new Quantum Tunnel. Hulk’s at the controls. He gives Steve the Infinity Stones in a case to take back in time to put back at the time they took them.

- Hulk notes he did try to bring Nat back when he did his Snap — and confesses he misses her. Steve does too.

- Steve says goodbyes to Bucky and Sam — then takes the Stones Case and Mjolnir, gets on the pad…

- He disappears — due to appear 5 seconds later after he’s completed his mission — but he doesn’t come back. Hulk and Sam are flustered, wanting to get him back…

- But then Bucky calls to Sam. There’s an old man on a bench by the water — it’s a 112 year old STEVE (“Old Steve”). Bucky tells Sam to go to him.

- Old Steve tells Sam he went back in time but then thought maybe he “should try out some of that life Tony always told me to get” — and that it was “beautiful”.

- Old Steve gives Sam a new Captain America shield which he got when “I had a little time to travel”

- with Steve and Bucky’s encouragement, Sam tries it on. He feels like it’s someone elses — but Old Steve tells him “it isn’t”.

- Sam tells Old Steve he will try his best…

146
… AND STEVE FINALLY DANCES

- … and that’s when Sam notices Old Steve’s old wedding ring.

- He asks if Old Steve will tell him about her. Old Steve smiles to himself, and says he won’t…

- In 1949, in some suburban house, Steve (the one that had just gone back in time, returned the stones and Mjolnir), his duty now done, with the woman he married…it’s Peggy Carter!

And we finally see Steve Rogers, his duty done, holding Peggy close, get the dance with her that he’s waited over 70 years for.

END

Callbacks:

In Captain America: The First Avenger, in 1945 as he’s about to crash a Nazi superplane that will trap him, Cap tells his crush Peggy Carter he promises he will take her to a dance, knowing her won’t make it. Unconscious, he’s in ice until he’s revived in 2011–70 years too late. Through the 10 year span of MCU, there’s regular call-backs to her, including him seeing old Peggy and finding out she had died… so this has been a dance a LONG time coming.

Note re series arc of Captain America:

He started out utterly selfless and dutiful — and was in opposition to Tony’s selfishness — the two balanced each other out — so as Cap helped Tony become more selfless, Tony’s helped him think about his own needs enough to act on them now his duty is done.

For those, such as myself, who are not steeped in Marvel lore, Alexis has kindly provided this:

RECAP RE STONES’S HISTORY

Given the history of the infinity stones, I’ve done a recap re each stone’s relevant movements during the preceding films to this one. It shows how the stones move around until the end of Infinity War/start of Endgame when Thanos has them all. The bits in bold relate to the times/places then visited in Endgame’s “Time Heist”.

1. SPACE STONE (ORIGINALLY INSIDE TESSERACT)

Avengers In 2012, Loki takes The Tesseract from SHIELD, but is then defeated in the BATTLE OF NEW YORK. The Tesseract is then taken to Asgard by Thor.

Thor: Ragnarok Just before Asgard is destroyed, Loki takes the Tesseract from Asgard’s vaults.

Infinity War Loki gives The Tesseract to Thanos to save Thor’s life. Thanos shatters the Tesseract, revealing the Space Stone.

2. POWER STONE (ORIGINALLY IN THE ORB)

Guardians of the Galaxy found in 2014 on MORAG (in The Orb) — then left on Xandar at end of film.

Infinity War Thanos (offscreen) decimated Xandar and took it

3. REALITY STONE (AKA THE AETHER)

Thor 2 In 2013 Jane Foster, Thor’s then girlfriend, is injected with The Aether (containing the stone) and is taken to ASGARD to be treated with it still in her.

It’s later removed and in an End credits scene, two Asgardians give it to The Collector for safekeeping.

Infinity War (2018 (Offscreen) Thanos takes it from the Collector.

4. SOUL STONE

Infinity War (2018) Thanos finds a holo projection in Nebula’s memory, showing that Gamora had found a map to the Soul Stone (before 2014) but burned it and did not tell Thanos. Thanos tortures Nebula in front of Gamora until — to save Nebula — Gamora reveals the Soul Stone is on VORMIR. He takes her there and obtains the Soul Stone by sacrificing Gamora.

5. TIME STONE (IN EYE OF AGAMOTTO)

Before Doctor Strange The Ancient One — in NEW YORK including in 2012 — has the Time Stone in the Eye of Agamotto.

Doctor Strange (2017) Strange takes possession of it from the Ancient One.

Infinity War (2018) Strange gives Time Stone to Thanos to save Tony’s life

6. MIND STONE (FROM LOKI’S SCEPTRE (AVENGERS) TO VISION (AGE OF ULTRON ONWARDS)

Avengers (2012) In 2012 it’s with Loki in the BATTLE OF NEW YORK in the Scepter which was given to him by Thanos. Taken by Avengers.

Avengers: Age of Ultron Mind Stone taken from Sceptre, put into Vision’s head.

Infinity War (2018) Thanos rips it from Vision’s head.
