Spec Script Sale: “Action №1”

Lionsgate buys action comedy spec script “Action №1” from writers Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon. From THR:

The story of how Nicolas Cage lost his rare comic book featuring the first appearance of Superman may finally be told. At least Hollywood’s version of it.
— —
The story revolves around a group of nerds who attempt to steal Cage’s copy of Action Comics №1, the landmark 1938 comic that introduced the world to the Man of Steel.

So did Garant & Lennon contact Nicholas Cage about his life rights? Or because the story was in the public domain, did they not have to?

Any of you esquires out there, please weigh in with your speculation.

Writers are repped by CAA and Principato-Young.

By my count, this is the 19th spec script sale of 2011.

At this point last year, there had been 16 spec sales.

Sales are up 19% year-to-date.
