Director of Events (Los Angeles, CA)

The Black List hiring a full-time Los Angeles-based Director of Events to plan, coordinate, and execute offline and occasional online events consistent with the Black List’s mission, including, but not limited to dinners, parties, screenings, and screenplay readings.

Strong candidates will likely possess exceptional interpersonal skills, previous experience with event planning in either the entertainment or technology industries, personal relationships within both, a strong interest in film and television (and a reverence for the writers who create it), and extraordinary comfort with technology.

In all likelihood, they’ll also be equally at ease in a dive bar or at the WGA awards, in a conversation about the merits of TWILIGHT franchise and one about the curation of the Criterion Collection.

Compensation is competitive with similar positions with 2–4 years of previous experience.

To apply, email a resume and cover letter, in PDF form, to directorofevents@blcklst.com with the subject header, Black List — Job Applicant.

Cover letters should include at least two of the following:

  1. You’re asked to host a panel discussion educating screenwriters about another industry/world (e.g. tech, fashion, sports. It’s entirely your call.) In 200 words or less, who would you have moderate and which three guests would you invite and why?
  2. You’re asked to curate a screening series of three films written by the same screenwriter. In 200 words or less, which three films and why?
  3. A one-paragraph celebration of your favorite book cover of all time (include an image of the cover in your cover letter, wherever you’d like.)
  4. Describe the most unusual yet effective corporate event you’ve ever attended (or can imagine) and explain why it worked (or would), despite its odd nature.

Manager of Data (Los Angeles, CA)

The Black List hiring a full-time Los Angeles-based Manager of Data to work closely with the current Black List team to improve and maintain its database and analysis of entertainment industry information.

Strong candidates will likely possess previous experience in the entertainment industry (particularly as it applies to writers and the circulation of their work) and extraordinary comfort with technology and data-focused software/languages (particularly Excel and ideally R and/or SQL).

This is an ideal job for someone looking for forty hour a week employment with no significant off-hours obligations, perhaps an aspiring writer with a particularly strong math, statistics, or computer science background. Someone who reads the industry trades and FiveThirtyEight.com with equal enthusiasm.

Compensation is competitive with major agency and management company assistant compensation. Agency experience is not required, though it will likely be viewed as an asset.

To apply, email a resume and cover letter, in PDF form, to managerofdata@blcklst.com with the subject header, Black List — Job Applicant.

Cover letters should include at least two of the following:

  1. A description of a method to predict the winners of the 2014 Academy Awards (all categories.)
  2. An answer to the question “Metacritic or RottenTomatoes? Why?”
  3. A list (with links) of your three favorite uses of data visualization online.
  4. A description of how you maintain a record of your screenplay reading.
