The Foot Fist Way

So you’re sitting there at your writing desk, someplace far, far away from Hollywood — oh, let’s say North Carolina — and you have a crazy idea for a ultra-low budget karate comedy. Would you save up pennies for four years to pull together a $35,000 budget, roll the dice, and produce the movie against all the odds? 

Well, that’s precisely what three novice filmmakers did, producing a movie called Foot Fist Way. And now these graduates of the North Carolina School of the Arts look like they not only have a hit on their hands, they also have a budding Hollywood career:

Although their next project together, the Gary Sanchez-produced HBO series “East Bound and Down,” centers on another underdog in the form of a baseball player (McBride) who is past his prime, the trio already seems to have beaten the odds, especially since the three had modest expectations for “The Foot Fist Way.”

“We wanted to show off our bodies,” jokes Best.

Adds McBride, “Yeah, it’s like, ‘Jody, whatever I do in this movie, I have to be able to wear denim shorts. I’ve got to show people these calves.’ “

Point being, if you don’t build it, there’s zero chance they will come. If you do build it, there’s always a chance they will — no matter how remote.
