“The Gap” by Ira Glass
Back in 2010, I featured an interview with Ira Glass of “This American Life” (NPR) fame. It was a series of four videos, one of which was particularly inspirational for those involved in creative work. In fact, I transcribed that key part of Glass’ message in the post:
“The thing I’d like to say to you with all my heart is that most everybody I know who does interesting creative work went through a phase of years where with their good taste, they could tell what they were doing wasn’t as good as they wanted it to be… it didn’t have that special thing they wanted it to have… Everybody goes through that phase… and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work.”
Then in March 2012, I featured a nice video treatment David Shiyang Liu had produced using Glass’ audio as inspiration. Here is that video:
Now I find another video treatment of the same Ira Glass text, this one beautifully rendered with wonderful visuals by Daniel Frohlich:
Wonderful isn’t it, how words from an interview for Current TV in 2010 have traveled around the world and evolved into something ever more compelling. It speaks to the very essence of creativity, how if we give ourselves over to it, and do the work — lots of it, as Glass suggests — magic can happen.
