I’ll keep a list and we’ll come back next year around this time to see who came closest or made the correct prediction. There’s even have a prize: I will read any script of the winner’s choice and do a thirty-minute teleconference to discuss it with them.
If I missed someone from previous posts, please let me know in Comments.
Now you will note there are some slots still open. And a few with two people. Because I have a big heart, two things. First I’ll keep the contest open through midnight tonight Pacific time [U.S.], so there is still time for you to join in the fun. Second if the winning number turns out to have been chosen by two people, they will both win the prize.
As noted previously, tracking spec script sales is not an exact science. For example, some sales which get listed as spec deals turn out to be options or even free options, the spec tag part of a PR ploy by producers to generate attention. Other deals are not reported as a spec sales, but are in effect. I do my best to sort through the trades, online resources, and individual contacts I have on the script acquisition and development side of things in Hollywood to confirm each deal, so the annual numbers are a strongly accurate accounting, but I make no claim to be ‘perfect’.
Finally people have been asking about my prediction. Last year I went on record as saying that sales would go up, but I had no idea they would nearly double in number. This year I’m going to pick 87. As in 1987, the year I sold the spec script K-9 and began my career as a screenwriter. [I’m going to leave that slot open should any of you want to select it.] Frankly if 87 specs sell this year, while certainly a decrease from 2011, that would still be a solid number and suggest buyers are continuing to be active in the acquisition market.
So your last chance to enter the contest. See you in Comments!
