The visual nature of cinema

Back in May during the Movies You Made series, I featured a short called I’m Christian Okoli from writer-director Cyrus Trafford. You can see that here. Cyrus recently reached out to me, sending me the promo for his Moment 2 Moment Pictures (M2M Pictures). I was so impressed with it, I asked if I could share it here. Cyrus agreed. Here it is:

Why I wanted to share this here is to remind us all of the visual nature of cinema. Cyrus and the characters in this video take us on a journey through three emotion stages, all done without dialogue. Just the images themselves conjure up a response, don’t they?

Dialogue is great. But in most movies, it is a secondary consideration to what transpires in the visual realm of the narrative. Actions, events, reactions, moments played out before our eyes.

Motion. Pictures. Two visual words put together into perhaps the most apt description of a movie.

So as we write, we should strive to embrace the visual potential of our stories.

Of course, per the promo piece, we’d do well to traffic in authentic, deep human emotions as well.

And oh, the power of the human face!
